Markets

Hi, we will be in Ghent Saturday 9th August. will there be any markets - antique, arts markets? Also, recommendations for a lazy long lunch - somewhere to sit down and relax, people watch, nice view that kind of thing. We have no wish to race around the beautiful town, would just rather take it easy. Any suggestions welcome. We will be arriving about 10am and leaving about 5pm. Staying in Brussels

There are at least 3 markets in Ghent on a Saturday, the normal mixed goods market (Vrijdagmaarkt) in the Vrijdagplein, a morning flea market in the Beverhoutplein %26quot;by St. Jacob%26#39;s%26quot;, close to the Vrijdagmaarkt, http://www.brocantmarkt-sintjacobs-gent.be, and an arts and crafts market in the Veerleplein (all day), which is in front of the Gravensteen castle.

If it%26#39;s a nice day, Belga Queen has a terrace on the Graslei, where you can watch boats on the canal etc., see http://www.belgaqueen.be/

Or, have a look at this one: http://www.korenleitwee.be/Html/en/index.html

From Gent Sint-Pieters Station, take tram no. 1 in the direction Wondelgem/Evergem and get off at Korenmarkt (very close to Graslei). If you don%26#39;t have a map of Ghent I would suggest you start by visiting the tourist office in the Belfry, they will also mark the markets etc. for you.

Belga Queen, sitting outside, is indeed an excellent spot for people watching. The same goes for %26#39;De Foyer%26#39; - restaurant in the theatre building - if you could get a spot on the balcony overlooking the Sint-Baafsplein.

This is their website: http://www.foyerntgent.be/

I%26#39;m afraid it%26#39;s in Dutch only, but you could consider that as a good sign: as they have mainly local visitors, the prices are more than reasonable for what you get (Belga Queen is more expensive, although the lunch prices are more moderate). Their telephone number is on the website and you get a good impression of how the place looks.
