scenic drive Bastonge to Brugge and where to stay overnight

We%26#39;re driving from Paris to Bastonge (husband big history buff) and looking for suggestions of additional WWII and/or WWI sites to visit in this area or between Bastonge and Brugge. Also would like opions on best small town to stay overnight between Bastonge area and Brugge. (We like scenic driving, history, good local food, and would prefer to avoid larger cities. Thanks for any help!

You could steer a bit west and go to Diekirch in the Grand-Duchy which has a good Battle of the Bulge museum and while you are there give it a small push south to Luxembourg and the American Military Cimetery in Hamm where General Patton is buried. Stay overnight in the Grand Hotel Alfa Mercure (Patton stayed there) they have a Patton Suite. Next day take the highway towards Belgium and Brugge. Or even better go Paris to Luxembourg direct, it%26#39;s not really off your path.

Diekirch is east of Bastogne of course.

If your husband is into military history he no doubt knows of Verdun. wereldoorlog1418.nl/battleverdun/index.htm It would not be too far out of your way to visit the area.

At Bastogne, the memorial to the GI%26#39;s who died in the Ardennes is impressive and moving. trabel.com/bastogne/bastogne-monuments.htm

I just bumped into this thread. Although I live retalively close I had never been to the Verdun area and we passed dozens of time on our way south. But my DW and I visited two years ago for the first time. Definitely take Texhills advice, words can%26#39;t describe the sadness and the crazyness you will encounter in that beautiful rolling hills. It still gives me goosebumps just to write about it. Also Bastenaken (Bastogne) is a must visit, we have a small pied a terre not far from there. The Ardennes and Luxemburg are fantastic places and Diekirch is very nice (and good beer also, my favorite). It will be a detour though. You easily can drive from Bastogne to Bruge in app. 3 hours but if you want to stay overnight, Leuven (Louvain) is one of my preferred places but it%26#39;s not a small town. Or Waterloo south of Brussels, talking about historic places... Maybe also consider to see the fantastic Delta Works in Zeeland in the Netherlands, not that far from Bruge.
