World War1 & 2 Tours

I%26#39;m sending my parents to Brussells for a 5 night break. Dad is particularly interested in Battlefield Tours etc and anything to do with WW1%26amp;2. Would appreciate any information on daytrips and things to do in for a couple in their 60%26#39;s. Also be grateful for reccommendations for a good centre hotel as a base

thanks

If your parents are interested in WWI, they should definitely visit Ypres (Ieper). The In Flanders Fields Museum is very interesting and impressive and, in fact, the whole area with its many soldier cemeteries is extremely touching. It is a bit too far from Brussels for a daytrip though (at least: if they want to take their time and not rush all day long), so it may be a good idea to book one or two nights in Ypres and then travel to Brussels or - if they want to see WWII-stuff - to Bastogne in the Ardens.

These two links (in English) may be of interest to you:

They fly to Charleroi, but im sure there are good train connections to Ypres and Bruges. Thanks for your quick response!

Not really, seems train from Charleroi Sud to Ieper takes 3 hrs and you need to change trains twice.

The military museum in Brussels is very extensive and includes a large collection of aircraft and a few WW2 vehicles. It is free.

Nothing to do with military history, but just across the courtyard is the auto museum, which is worth a visit. It is not free.

As for hotels, I like the Ibis St. Catherine and the Ibis %26quot;off Grand Place%26quot;. You can book either at www.accorhotels.com .
