Restaurants in Antwerp

Hi we are staying in Antwerp for 3 nights 22 - 25 Aug and wondered if you could recommend some good modern / trendy european and italian restaurants. We are staying in Hotel Julien so the closer to the hotel the better unless most of the city is walking distance!? Also any cool bars to go before and after dinner. Any recommendations really appreciated.

Many thanks for all your help.

Yes, about everything in the city is walking distance. Open www.viamichelin.be and fill in the address of hotel Julien and the respective addresses mentioned below. You will then easily see how %26#39;far%26#39; everything is.

Gallo Nero, Grote Pieter Potstraat 36 - close to Grote Markt

Pazzo, Oude Leeuwenrui 12 - a short walk from historical centre

Contrasto, Waalse Kaai 47 (=south quarter - a 20 min. walk from historical centre)

The Chili Club (Asian), De Burburestraat 43 (=south quarter)

Modern/trendy:

La Riva, Londenstraat 52 (=north quarter - you will need to take a taxi to get here and make reservations ahead)

Restaurant Lux, Adriaan Brouwerstraat 13 (at the Bonaparte Dock, can easily be walked)

Dock%26#39;s Café, Jordaenskaai 7 - along the bank of the river Scheldt

Brasserie Appelmans, Papenstraatje 1 - opposite Our Lady%26#39;s Cathedral - they also have a cocktail bar, the Absinth Bar

Pier 19, Brouwersvliet 19 - along the bank of the river Scheldt

MatizzE, Van Breestraat 4 - centre - winner of %26quot;Mijn Restaurant%26quot;, based on the Australian format %26quot;My restaurant rules%26quot;

Bars:

Cocktails at Nine, Lijnwaadmarkt 9 - behind Our Lady%26#39;s Cathedral - I wish you good luck to find a table!

Strantwerpen, an artificial beach along the bank of the river Scheldt - the place to see and to be seen in the summer!

Sips Bar, Gillisplaats 8 (=south quarter - a 20 min. walk from historical centre)

Absinth Bar, Papenstraatje 1 - opposite Our Lady%26#39;s Cathedral

Mata Mata %26amp; Pili Pili, Hoogstraat 44 - close to Grote Markt

I had excellent meals, wherever i ate in Antwerp. The 2 most memorable restaurants were the Luna, on north quarter(www.laluna.be), and the Zoute Zoen in the city center(http://sites.resto.com/lezoutezoen/). The first one is more modern style while the other is more traditional. Both were very nice, and recommended by the Michelin Guide.

Greece4Ever,

I don%26#39;t know when you last ate at Le Zoute Zoen. It isn%26#39;t what it used to be. The latest entries on the resto website of zone03 (www.zone03.be) aren%26#39;t overly positive. My latest experience wasn%26#39;t good either. It used to be very good the year that Viviane was elected Lady Chef of the Year, I think that was in 2006. They are mentioned in the Michelin guide for their Bib Gourmand (price/quality ratio for their market menu). They don%26#39;t have a %26#39;macaron%26#39; (star), but 1 fork only just like so many other restaurants. IMO it%26#39;s nothing special (anymore).

I must try La Luna. Never thought about that before. Thanks for the suggestion!

I still like %26quot;le zoute zoen%26quot; very much. Even last Saturday.....

Thank you very much for all the great responses. I just have one more question! Are there quite a few restaurants open on Sundays or is it generally quiet on the restaurant scene? Thanks again

|||

Some of the nicer restaurants are closed on Sundays. No worries, though, you will always find one that is open.
