From Bruges to Ghent or Antwerp

HI. My husband and I are spending 4 days in Bruges this month. We thought it might be nice to take the train from Bruges to Antwerp or Ghent for an afternoon trip. Is this easy to do and how long would the train journey be? Which place would be more interesting to visit for an afternoon? Thanks for your help!

I%26#39;ll be visiting all 3 cities you mention and I know that an IC train from Bruges to Ghent is approximately 25 minutes and that trains run frequently between the 2 cities. Same is true re Antwerp. Both Ghent and Antwerp have their own unique charms - it will be a personal decision I think based on your interests. Ghent is about twice the size of Bruges and Antwerp about twice the since of Ghent.

You can search schedules on the following site...

And here%26#39;s a fairly recent article on a day in Antwerp...

For just one afternoon I would go with the city closest to Brugge which is Gent.

Gent may be bigger than Brugge but downtown is about the same size and that is where you want to be to visit the medieval castle, the cathedral and see the old port.

I agree with the above poster (and not just because I live in Ghent). Although I love the city, I tink Antwerp is too big and too far away for just an afternoon trip. I would choose Ghent, but stay there in the evening for dinner. Some time ago Ghent has won an award for its illumination at night, and it does look very romantic indeed. Moreover you have a wider range of (tourist-trap-free) restaurants than in Bruges.

Both are fun towns. If you want tons of shopping then I would go for Antwerp. Ghent has a nice boat ride and Castle of Counts is fun. Can%26#39;t go wrong with either for a day trip.

I stayed in Bruges back in 2000, %26amp; went to Ghent for the day by train, don%26#39;t remember how long it took exactly,(was either half or one hour) we walked from the station to the old part of town but would not recommend this as it was much further than we thought, %26amp; through what was a not very nice part of the town, we got the tram back however, so would advise this as an option or a taxi. Did the boat trip along the canal, %26amp; went up the clock tower, which has a lift.

Would also recommend for half day trip, (if they are still running) a minibus from the square in Bruges up to Damme (? spelling ) you get a running commentry via headphones in whatever language you choose. When you get to Damme you get on a paddle steamer %26amp; return via a canal.

Have just been this month.

It took no more than 25 minutes on train between Ghent/Bruges. There is a limited stop train which would be even quicker.

Ghent was simply brilliant.
