train travel in Belgium

My family and I are spending one week in Brugge and hope to travel throughout Belgium on the train. Is there a rail card that we can use or do we buy individual journey tickets?

You could use the Rail Pass, that entitles you to 10 journeys which you can choose anywhere to in Belgium, for 71 EUR in total thus € 7.1/trip.

For youngsters under 26 there is the Go Pass, same system, but somewhat cheaper.

You could use a Rail Pass for 1 person, 10 trips. Or 10 persons making the same trip. Or 5 persons making twice a same trip...

Just check that you don%26#39;t use this pass for trips that with a normal ticket would cost less than this 7.1 EUR.

There is also the possibility of buying a Net Card, which allows you to travel all over the entire train network for example 1 week, but this can be expensive. It depends on how much you will use the train.

Check their web site: http://www.b-rail.be/main/E/index.php

This rail pass sounds intriguing.

I will be working in Ans for 2 weeks but I%26#39;d rather stay in Brussles. I wouldn%26#39;t mind the 60-90 minutes commute by train each way. Could I use this rail pass to commute daily between Brussles Midi and Ans?

If so do I just go to the ticket counter in Midi station and ask for a rail pass?

|||

Yes, you sure can use the rail pass for your daily rides between Brussels and Ans. Normal price for a ticket is 12.30 one-way, so you will save quit a bit with the railpass. In case you%26#39;re under 26, there%26#39;s the Go Pass which is only 46 euro for 10 rides.

|||

Thank you. So I just ask for a rail pass in the Midi station? The cost is 71 Euro? Do you know if they take credit card? Then when I get ready to use it I just fill in the date amd Brussels Midi - Ans or Ans - Brussels Midi depending on which way I%26#39;m going. Thats it for 10 trips? What a great option this is. Thanks for all your help.

You can buy the passes at any station. Brussels Midi being a large one, I%26#39;m pretty sure you can pay with CC.

You do have to fill in the strip before boarding the train. Don%26#39;t forget to do so!

reh2775, it%26#39;s not a good idea to piggyback on someone else%26#39;s question when yours should really have been different (i.e. what is the cheapest way to commute between Brussels and Ans by train?)!

If commuting is all you are doing, then in my opinion a Rail Pass at €71 is not the best option: you can get a 1-week Railcard, for this specific journey, for €56 (or even €20.50 if it is possible to deduct the contribution Belgian employers are supposed to make to their employees%26#39; travel costs, which I am not sure about in your situation).

Go to http://sefora.b-rail.be/sefora/

Sefora/berekenen.do?action=accessTicket%26amp;langue=3 (or if you can%26#39;t find it, http://www.b-rail.be/nat/E/tarifs/ then click, on the left, %26quot;how much for your journey%26quot;)

and fill in the two stations e.g. Bruxelles-Midi and Ans, leave single trip etc. but select age bracket on the right, then click %26quot;calculate%26quot;, it will give you - if you scroll down - the whole range of possible fares including Rail Pass and Railcard for different periods.

Thank you for all of your suggestions.

I have a question on the rail card.

It seems it would allow me to make my way to work and back each day for 1 week for 56 as compared to 71 for the rail pass.

(assuming 2 trips per day, 5 days per week on the rail pass)

My question is this:

Is the week on the rail card 7 days from first use, or, is it a calendar week like Monday thru Sunday?

I could not find this info on the web page. I did see where the rail pass is good for 1 year so if I don%26#39;t use all 10 trips during 1 visit I could use it again if I return a few weeks later.

Thank you again for your suggestions.

I think you can let your week start when you like. E.g. start on Wedsneday, last day for travel is Tuesday next.

With this %26quot;One Week Traject Train Card%26quot; (the one at 56 euro) you can travel from Brussels to Ans and back as much as you like within that timeframe. It is limited to Brussels - Ans, though.

With the RailPass you can make 10 single rides all over Belgium.
