Brussels For The Day

Our family will be in Brussels for the day the week of September 12, 2008. Any suggestions on things to see or do for the day. If possible, suggestions on sites that will be convenient to walk or suggestions for getting around the city. Will also appreciate dining information. Thank you

Click on the %26quot;Things to Do%26quot; button to the left to get many ideas on the sights of Brussels. If you hsve young children, MiniEurope and the Atomium would be fun.

Brussels is a government and business town and so has very many restaurants. Prices are high as the business and government people are dining on someone else%26#39;s dime, plus there is a mandatory tip and a high sales tax included in the bill.

For lunch, if the weather is fine, stop at a grocery store and pick up picnic items for a lunch in a park. For dinner, Italian ans Greek restaurants offer less expensive prices than others. Note that almost all the restaurants will have a menu and prices located somewhere near the entrance. Knowing the prices helps prevent any unwelcome surprises when the bill arrives.

Convenient to walk to FROM WHERE?? You don%26#39;t say how/where you will be arriving! You also don%26#39;t say anything about the sort of things you like to do, for example, do you want to include museums (if so, don%26#39;t come on a Monday)? What sort of %26quot;dining%26quot; do you mean?

Without a bit more of a steer, all I can say is that the Grand%26#39; Place and Galeries St. Hubert are both about 5 minutes walk from Gare centrale, if that is where you are arriving just follow the people going across the road and down the hill. I would also advise you NOT to eat in the Ilôt Sacré area that starts below the Galeries (rue des Bouchers, petite rue des Bouchers, rue Grétry), other than at Chez Léon if you like mussels and fries.

Will be arriving from London in the morning and leaving to go back to London in the evening via train. Some interests are local history, museums (although afraid they might take up too much time)cathedral/architecture buildings, shopping for things other than clothes. Would rather walk (although not opposed to other travel means) as much as possible so we can see the sights on our schedule. Would like to see as much as we can in one day, to get an idea of what Brussels is about, without zig zagging all over the city. As far as dining, would like to try the local cuisine but dislike fish. Not so interested in fancy restaurants rather more casual types of establishments. Would like some chocolate and Belgium waffles as well. Many thanks for your time and suggestions.
