Train or bus from Amsterdam to Bruges

Which is the quickest trip from Amsterdam to Bruges? Would appreciate some website addresses to explore possibilities.

Would like to eventually get to Ypres from Bruges, so any suggestions gratefully accepted.

Thanks in advance.

|||

Trains are always faster than coaches, and in any case I don%26#39;t know of a coach from Amsterdam to Brugge unless the one to London passes through there (see www.eurolines.nl). The Amsterdam-Brussels coach stops in Antwerp.

I would suggest you put your dates and times into http://bahn.hafas.de/bin/query.exe/en, using Amsterdam-Centraal as departure station and Brugge as destination (it will ask you to confirm: Brugge is the station you want), you will have to change in Antwerp, should take 3h46.

Brugge to Ieper takes 1 1/2 - 2 hrs, you have to change in Kortrijk.

Please help

Hello ladies and gents could somebody help me please i plan to go to Liege and the best flight plan seems to be from Dublin-Belgium( im from up north) does anyone have any better sugestions or how long would it take to get from Brussels to liege by train? thanks.

|||

Well yes, Liège is in Belgium so it would be a good idea to fly to Belgium (although the closest airport to Liège, apart from Liège itself of course, is Maastricht in the Netherlands)! I don%26#39;t know anything about flights from Liverpool but presumably you can check out Liverpool Airport%26#39;s website. Otherwise there are certainly flights from Manchester and Leeds/Bradford to Brussels Airport. From the station beneath Brussels airport (BRU in this timetable: http://bahn.hafas.de/bin/query.exe/en) to Liège-Guillemins by train takes a bit less than 1 1/2 hours, changing at either Bruxelles-Nord or Leuven.

If you are considering going to Dublin to fly with Ryanair, be advised that they do not use Brussels Airport (BRU) but Charleroi (CRL), even if they somewhat misleadingly call it Brussels South. From that airport, you can take a local bus (68 I think), which takes about 10 minutes to Charleroi-Sud railway station, and from there, every hour on the hour (on weekdays, I didn%26#39;t check weekends) you can catch a direct train to Liège which takes 1h13.

|||

Awww qaminari you are a superstar thank you for the helpful reply i will buy you a bunch of flowers and some fine wine if i see you in Belgium :P

|||

alright mate

are you going to the everton game in liege? we are flying in from lpool via dublin on the pound flights with ryanair so probs see you. we havent any match tickets yet, you have any ideas???

|||

Couldn%26#39;t be bothered with all the nonsense of going to Dublin so i fly from manny,also i may have a ticket( but even that%26#39;s not guaranteed yet) but no spares sorry lad but Nurmburg and Florence i was in the same boat but got in both grounds. The only way to find out about tickets is once your there,then you can go on missions looking for them but unless your going a day or two before hand you will have more of a battle trying to get any. That%26#39;s just me going on places I%26#39;ve been to and how its been for me.I%26#39;m there on Tuesday so i can at least mooch about for a day before more arrive that%26#39;s about all i can suggest really.

4 days like to see Ypres Antwerp and Brugges

Leaving Paris 15/12/08 need to be back to Paris airport 4pm 19/12/08.Hiring car should we go to Brugges first for 2 nites then Ypres (grandfather grave site) for 2 nites and miss Antwerp altogether. Has anyone got a better plan.Some travel times between towns would be nice.

Your ideas would be greatly appreciated.

|||

For travel times by car (I only know trains) use www.viamichelin.com. You can just fill in departure and arrival cities, but note that in their own language, this would be Brugge and Ieper although the website should also recognise Bruges and Ypres.

Christmas markets in Brussels?

I%26#39;m in Brussels the last weekend before Christmas. Where is the best Christmas market in the centre of the town?

|||

There IS only one %26quot;Christmas%26quot; (actually, %26quot;Winter%26quot;) market in the centre of Brussels, which runs between the Bourse (right by the Grand%26#39; Place) and Ste. Catherine area, around the open-air skating ring. They haven%26#39;t put up details yet but watch this site: www.plaisirsdhiver.be/

1 day visit

We will be in Brussels for only 1 day at end of our vacation this October.Would you suggest we use our Benelux pass and travel to Ghent for a big part of our last day and return to Brussels for dinner? We already have a hotelroom in Brussels as we will be sadly leaving the next day to fly home to the United States.We will be staying the night prior in Brugges so not sure what we should do our last full day in Belgium?

|||

If you will be in Brussels for only 1 day I cannot understand why you would want to spend it in Ghent. If you go to the Brussels forum and click on %26quot;Things to do%26quot; in the lists on the left, I would have thought you could find more than enough in this city to keep you occupied and interested: even without visiting any of the world class museums and art galleries, the Grand%26#39; Place and Galeries St. Hubert should be worth your time.

If on the other hand you want to spend the day in Ghent, I presume you would not be considering taking the train 1 hour to Brussels from Brugge, checking in, and then taking the train 30 minutes back to Ghent, then returning to Brussels. Ghent is on the way from Brugge to Brussels so it would make more sense to get off at Ghent St. Pieters, leaving your luggage there, visit the city (which means taking a tram into the centre), collect your luggage and continue your journey. If you have a Benelux pass you won%26#39;t need to buy a %26quot;VIA%26quot; ticket allowing you to stop off on the way, as your pass allows you to stop off as often as you like (although, if you take one of the fastest trains, Ghent is the only stop between Brugge and Brussels anyway!).

Getting from Charleroi to Radisson SAS EU Brussels

I get into Charleroi at 9.30 on Fri night. Looking at the info on the Charleroi airport website the bus %26amp; train leave within 5 minutes of each other.

I then need to get to the Radisson SAS EU Hotel. Their website says

%26quot;The hotel is easily accessible; there are excellent transport connections to the hotel:

Within 2 minutes walking distance from the train station %26#39;Luxembourg%26#39;

Bus stop close by the Radisson SAS EU Hotel with connection in all directions.

3.5 kilometres from Midi train station with Thalys and Eurostar connections%26quot;

I tried putting %26#39;Luxembourg%26quot; into the belguim train planner www.sncb.be but it gave me train connections to actually get to Luxembourg country!

Is the train or bus easiest/cheapest/faster? If anyone could give actual specifics on the route for me, that would be very much appreciated.

Scubamel

|||

You need to put in Bruxelles-Luxembourg (just as, for other Brussels stations, you would put in Bruxelles-Midi, Bruxelles-Central, Bruxelles-Nord...).

I presume you have noticed that the train doesn%26#39;t leave from Charleroi Airport but from Charleroi-Sud railway station, which means you have to get into Charleroi first, on local bus 68 (or 10 minutes by taxi).

There is a train from Charleroi-Sud at 21.57, arr. Ottignies 22:38, dep. 22:47 arr. Bruxelles-Luxembourg 23:05 (stop after Ottignies, train continues to Bruxelles-Midi).

If you miss that one, you can still take a train to Brussels (23:07 - arr. Bruxelles-Midi 00:17) but not stopping at Gare du Luxembourg and there isn%26#39;t a train connection at that time of night.

Personally, I would prefer to take the Ryanair shuttle coach to Gare du Midi (one hour) then walk through the station and catch the 27 bus from its starting point in %26quot;rue couverte%26quot; (signposted from within the station: when you exit the station you will be under a railway bridge, turn left and the stop is right there) to the stop %26quot;Luxembourg%26quot;.

|||

Thankyou so much for your detailed post, it is much appreciated.

One more question - is there bus timetables online so I can check out what time the 27 bus leaves as you mentioned above?

Scubamel

|||

Last one on a weekday is 23.20 (bus will show destination Georges Henri rather than Andromeda but this is fine for you):

stib.be/appl/…1123F.htm

Incidentally it costs €2 if you buy the ticket on board, if you want to save a bit of money you can buy a ticket in advance (€1.70) from the machine on the furthest platform of the tram %26quot;station%26quot; you will see straight ahead of you as you come out of the station.

In case you want to see other lines, it%26#39;s www.stib.be/horaires-dienstregeling.html?l=fr

When you get to Place du Luxembourg, which you may recognise by the juke-box like building of the European Parliament behind the station building, the %26quot;Luxembourg%26quot; stop is outside a café called Fat Boys. Walk straight ahead and turn right, you will see your hotel across the road.

response to Ghent question.

This is for a certain individual who replied to our question about going to Ghent vs Brussels for a day. I would like to thank you for your input and for making our decision to stay in Brussels for the day more fact based.I would also like to ask that in any future communications with people from around the world that you try not to come across so nasty while attempting to make the people asking the questions feel like they are of a lesser intellectual capacity than you. If that was your intent how sad.We certainly are aware of what Brussels has to offer and were simply doing some fact finding. Stay with being helpful and please try to have your responses contain more positive help and leave the attitude behind as it does not belong in this type of a forum.

Renassiance hotel?

How far is it from the Grand Place? What kind of area is it in? And is it any good? I%26#39;m visiting just as a tourist and what to be near the tourist attractions.

|||

If you google renaissance hotel brussels, you will get a map showing you exactly where it is. This hotel is more conveniently located for business visitors (especially those visiting certain EU departments) than tourists, being near the European Parliament and the Gare du Luxembourg, so convenient for getting to Luxembourg if by any chance you wanted to. It isn%26#39;t on the metro, but about 10 minutes walk from Trône on metro line 2 (which serves Gare du Midi); on the other hand it is served by plenty of buses, including the 27 from Gare du Midi where you would arrive on the Eurostar. Also convenient for people arriving from Brussels Airport as it is served by the airport bus (12 on weekdays, 21 at weekends).

The area itself is an office ghetto apart from the Place du Luxembourg which is full of cafés and restaurants. Brussels is too small for anywhere to be far from the tourist attractions, but the Luxembourg area is not bang in the centre of town, most tourists want to be near the Grand%26#39; Place.

If you look at the list of %26quot;Brussels hotels%26quot; on the left you will find that many VT members have commented on location.

|||

i have stayed near the EU business district area, i would NOT recommend it for fri-sun stay, it is literally a ghost town during this time, most things are closed and there are hardly any people. I would recommend you stay at renaissance sister company Marriot. It is opposite the stock exchange and near Boeurs station. It is central to everything, and literally a few mins away from the grand place, bars, restaurant etc. Its slightly more pricey than Rennaisance, but definately worth the extra price. Or maybe stay at the Alma hotel? I have stayed here many times, and it is very central as well, only a few mins walk from grand place.

How to get from Amsterdam central train station to Antwerp

Hi everyone! It will be my first time in Europe for a business trip and I don%26#39;t know how to get to Antwerp train station from Amsterdam central train station. Could you please help me as I need to be in Antwerp before 10 A.M?

|||

The 07:56 InterCity arrives at Antwerpen-Centraal at 10:01, if you need to be there before then the previous train is 06:56 arr. 09:01. Being an IC, you don%26#39;t need reservations, can just buy your ticket on the date of travel or e.g. the day before if that is more convenient.

http://bahn.hafas.de/bin/query.exe/en

|||

Just type in %26quot;Dutch railways%26quot; and you should reach their website.This will give you all the info. you need through the journey planner including the platform number for departure and the cities passed through en route.

More precise addresses appear to be www.ns.nl/reisplanner %26amp; nshispeed.nl

Dutch Railways phone number is (00) 313 02 354 000, wait to be offered Option 1 English speaking, if you can%26#39;t speak Dutch.

Fares to Antwerp are as follows:

1st class single 43.40 euros

%26quot; %26quot; return 86.80 %26quot;

2nd class single 28.80 %26quot;

%26quot; %26quot; return 57.60 %26quot;

I checked this 2 minutes ago.

So, Central it is.....

I already asked and was answered my question about the difference there is about changing trains in train stations when traveling with luggage. It was recommended Central Station. Oh, I forgot to say I will take the train at Bruxelles Int%26#39;l Airport and my destination is Bruges of course for those who didn%26#39;t see my last post.

So, this is my question:

When I buy the tickets, Should I say I want to change in Central?, or maybe, say: Tickets to Bruges via Central? These might sound maybe silly questions but it is very important to know these small details that could help release the stress that one might already have because of jet lag. I begin my journey at 9:40AM and arrive at Bruxelles at 9:05AM the next day. So, that%26#39;s why these small details will help me feel less stressed when we arrive at the airport and have to buy the train tickets to travel for a few more hours in order to arrive at our first stop in our schedule. (Our schedule is Bruges, Paris and London.)

So thanks in advance for your helpful reply.

Yvonne

|||

All you need to ask for is %26quot;so many tickets to Brugge, please, one-way%26quot;. They know you can%26#39;t get there without changing trains in Brussels and it makes no difference to the price whether you change at Nord, Central or Midi: one Brussels (city) station is the same as any other. (For the record, Brussels Airport is in fact outside the city and region of Brussels, in Zaventem, Flanders!)

|||

Dear qaminari:

Thanks for your answer to my post and also for the geography information. It%26#39;s important that a tourist know these details. It%26#39;s good to be able to find one%26#39;s bearings.

So, I buy the tickets as suggested and once I%26#39;m at Central I check the next train to Bruges and I%26#39;m on my way.

Thanks again.

directions, please

Could anyone please provide me with directions to walk from Alfa Empire Hotel in Appelmanstraat to the University of Antwerp? How long should the walk take for a very fit 24 year old? Not me, my daughter!

|||

The University of Antwerp has four different campus.

1. Stadscampus

2. Drie Eiken

3. Middelheim

4. Groenenborger

Here%26#39;s a website with directions to the various campus:

http://www.ua.ac.be/main.aspx?c=.ROUTE I%26#39;m afraid it%26#39;s only in Dutch. If it%26#39;s not clear, just let me know what campus.

|||

Thank you for info.

I%26#39;m not sure which campus she requires, but I%26#39;ll let you know as soon as possible.

|||

She needs directions to Drei Eiken, please.

|||

It%26#39;s a fair walk, even for a fit 24 yr old!

In fact from the hotel to the campus is 7 km or about one hour and 45 min. walk.

There are buses that leave at Central Station (bus no. 17 or no. 21) and stop at the University Hospital that is on the same grounds as the campus.

|||

Thank you, amboseli.

It looks like she%26#39;ll be on the bus!

Wonderful Brugge Trip Report

Second visit to this wonderful city and just as perfect as the first.

Brugges has got to be one of the most romantic small towns in the world. Beauty, culture and friendly folk in a picture-perfect setting. Its so beautiful and walkable to everything you would want to see or do. Extremely safe even late at night.

We stayed at the Cote Canal B%26amp;B and I can%26#39;t say enough about this outstanding B%26amp;B and Caroline who owns and runs it. The most wonderful B%26amp;B we have ever stayed at. Did a separate review for anyone interested. Its a two-minute walk to the town center. Extremely quiet and romantic. Only problem, as with all old buildings, there is no elevator and steps to the rooms could be challenging to older folk or people with special needs. The incredible view and garden right on the canal is wonderful. The house is full of antics and history. Caroline is a gracious host and so friendly. Breakfast was to die for. Fresh squeezed orange juice and fruit bowls, warm rolls of all kinds, meat, cheeses, and eggs cooked anyway you want. Fresh ground coffee, etc. Breakfast is served in the garden when its nice outside. Huge rooms with private bathrooms and spotlessly clean.

Had some great food at Diligence on Hoogstraat 5. Right around the corner from Diligence another great place with super yummy fish dishes. I lost the card so can%26#39;t post the name.. .sorry. Its on the same side of the street as Diligence and is only open for dinner closed Mon %26amp; Tues. Maybe someone can help out here. Ate dinner at Cambrinus and it wasn%26#39;t as good as last year. Still an incredible place for their house beer that comes in light or dark.

Took the brewery tour and it was fun. Who couldn%26#39;t love a Zot brew at the end. Came home with some Zot glasses.

Took the boat ride all over again to marvel at the incredible beauty at every turn. Not to be missed by any visitor to Brugge.

Evenings are just wonderful when the crowds go. Anyone wanting to visit Brugge should try and stay at least one night.

Train ride from Amsterdam to Brugges was very easy to do.

Great site to see what Brugges looks like, www.flickr.com. Type in Brugge in search feature.

Anyone with questions, please feel free to PM me.

Distance around town

Just wanted to know how far the Brus-Midi train station was from the Grand Palace. We wanted to take the bike tour (starts at 10a) but our train doesn%26#39;t arrive until 9a and I wasn%26#39;t sure that was enough time to get there.

|||

If you are bringing bikes it is certainly enough time as it would only take 10 (say 15 with traffic lights) minutes to cycle straight up Avenue Stalingrad and rue du Midi to the GP.

If you aren%26#39;t bringing bikes it%26#39;s not just the time to get to the GP that you need to take into account, but surely also the time to stow your bags somewhere and collect a bike from wherever these are kept. You can go by train to Gare centrale (e.g. by the airport train that leaves Midi at 09:12) in 4 minutes, then it takes about 5 minutes to walk to the GP.

Brussels Hotel

Hi Guys thinking of a trip to Brussels in dec for a short break and also to see the Christmas Market, we are thinking of the Marriott Hotel to rest our (hopefully weary heads)have read the review%26#39;s but just wondered if any of you guys out there have any comments on the Marriott = good or bad.

|||

I can only comment on location (and on the strange English used in the archeological display in the restaurant, which talks about fish being capturated and consumated..). It will be bang in the middle of the Winter Market, which has stalls around the Bourse and then meanders to the Ste. Catherine area. The Bourse (stock exchange) was lit up last year with a sort of soundless light display, and as this is bang opposite the Marriott, I%26#39;m not sure whether this would be a bother for bedrooms on the Bd. Anspach side. You couldn%26#39;t be much more central, although the fact that the connection to Gare du Midi (if you are coming by Eurostar) is by underground tram is not the most convenient if you have a lot of luggage (most trams are still high up with narrow entrances). But it is only 3 stops from Midi.

train problems - eurostar!!

hi everyone,

because of the fire in the eurotunnel they%26#39;ve cancelled our train from london to brussels which was due to go to 2.34pm on tues 16 sept. The next one leaves at 3.34pm and gets there over an hour later, which means we miss our 5.59pm train from brussels to Oberhausen (via koln). We%26#39;d booked tickets in advance for this train, which is an ICE. I looked and the only other trains running now that we can catch are at 7.24pm, with the part to Koln being a thalys train. I%26#39;ve been on these before and know they are reservation only...my question is, do you think they%26#39;ll let us use the ticket we%26#39;ve bought already, to go on the thalys train? or will we have to buy a whole new ticket?

please, any advice would be great, thank you!!

lucy

|||

1) If you have only PURCHASED your ICE ticket from Brussels to Oberhausen in advance, then you can re-use the ticket on another ICE train. However if what you have is a reservation (with carriage and seat number), your ticket is valid only on the train in question, and to tell you whether you can change it and with what conditions, it would be necessary to know when you bought it and at what sort of price (full-price tickets are fully refundable: cheap ones cannnot be changed at all and you would normally have to buy another ticket). I have no idea whether Belgian (or German) Railways or Thalys are accepting special arrangements for people whose Eurostar bookings have been cancelled - Eurostar is a separate company.

2) Your ICE ticket would certainly not normally be valid for the Thalys from Brussels to Köln, Thalys requires a reservation showing a carriage and seat number on the Thalys departure in question.

3) I would advise you to contact Belgian Railways since a) presumably this is who you purchased your Brussels-Oberhausen ticket from, therefore when you give them the details they will know what conditions apply to changing it and b) as they are partners in both the Eurostar and Thalys consortiums, they are best-placed to decide whether they can take the first problem into account as regards the second. Contact details on www.belrail.be/E/informations/contact.html (from outside Belgium, add 32 and drop the first 0). Note that under %26quot;how to contact me%26quot; you can also click on %26quot;send me an e-mail%26quot; (not me, obviously, but Belgian Railways!).

|||

thank you so much for your help!! I just emailed D.Bahn as I bought the ticket via them. I did purchase one with a seat reservation. I got it on 3 September and it cost 19 euros without the reservation, with was 2 euros extra. I expect this is the cheap ticket that I can%26#39;t exchange now? The trouble is, there%26#39;s no other ICE trains so I guess the best option is for me to buy a ticket for the thalys train when I get to brussels and hopefully try and use the ticket I%26#39;ve already bought, for the rest of the journey, if they%26#39;ll let me.

|||

Probably a bit late in the day now but you could get there early and try and see if they%26#39;ll put you on the 13:25 - it%26#39;s a long shot but if you explain you%26#39;ve got the ICE booked they may, may let you on that. It%26#39;s worth a try. The Brussels trains are never anything like as full as the Paris ones, particularly mid-week, so you may get lucky.

Where is the Riverboat cruise dock (Viking)?

Need some idea of exactly where the Viking riverboat cruise dock is located. We will be coming in mid-Nov to Antwerp (from US to Brussels) via train or bus from Brussels. We will stay 1 night before boarding riverboat, which actually stays docked in Antwerp for day %26amp; half for touring.

|||

I would suggest you ask Viking, as they don%26#39;t illustrate this on their website and while I would guess it is somewhere on the Scheldekaai (click on the map on here http://www.mm-tools.be/MASTER/agents/eventmaste/eventmast1/content.php?hmID=1782%26amp;PHPSESSID=335c18811f002eb29c3fc5fe716ac152), as you can see the possibilities are quite large. Viking have a contact page: https:/…index.aspx

Belgium in 1.5 days

My husband and I are planning a trip to Europe from 12/24-1/5. In this time, we would like to go to Paris, London and Belgium. My mother and Bomma were from Antwerp and I would love to see this city. We would also like to spend some time in Brussels.

Is it possible to take the train from Paris to Brussels/Antwerp and spend 1.5 days seeing both cities before leaving for London? Or, should we just pick one city? (e.g., leaving Paris on 12/29 in the morning for Belgium, and leaving Belgium for London on 12/30 in the evening.) Any advice is most welcome!

|||

You can do whatever you want! Thalys (www.thalys.com) from Paris-Nord to Bruxelles-Midi takes 1h22, local (IC) train from Bruxelles-central (you can start from Midi, central or Nord) to Antwerpen-Centraal takes about 40 mins, and the Eurostar to London from Bruxelles-Midi takes about 2 hours (www.eurostar.com). So you could arrive in Brussels from Paris on 29/12 (better get used to European way of writing dates) and leave Brussels for London on the evening of 30/12, with a sidetrip to Antwerp in between.

Alternatively, the Thalys to Amsterdam stops in Antwerp as well as Brussels, so you could stay there and visit Brussels on the way back to catch the Eurostar, leaving your luggage at Midi and continuing by train to Gare centrale, which is near the Grand%26#39; Place.

|||

Thanks so much, you advice is very helpful. It seems we are a bit early as fares are published 60 days in advance. Can you tell me the best website to purchase all of our tickets?

I think we are planning on doing what you said - take the Thalys from Paris to Antwerp on 29/12 in the mid afternoon (leaving our luggage at the Antwerp station while we look around), and return on to Brussels in the evening to spend the night. We%26#39;ll then spend the day on 30/12 in Brussels and leave that evening.

My only major concern is that we may be spreading ourselves too thin for that amount of time and the two cities. We can postpone our trip to London by one day, and spend two nights in Brussels instead of one. We would then be heading to London on New Years Eve. Do you see any major advantages/disadvantages to either plan?

4 days in and around Ypres.

Visiting Ypres at the end of October, intend doing the war memorials etc. Are there any beer festivals on between the 29th October and the 1st November?Many thanks.

|||

None at all, I%26#39;m afraid, you are either too early or too late (hop festival in nearby Poperinge is this coming weekend). You could still go to the hop museum, though: www.poperinge.be/UK/data/nat_hop_museum.htm.

|||

Sorry to bring more bad news SD, but you miss the Karakter beer festival at the Palace Hotel by a few days - it%26#39;s on October 25th.

Still, there%26#39;s plenty of good beer cafes to keep you occupied and you can use the Belbus service to get to the ones in the country - guide here:

http://www.whitebeertravels.co.uk/delijn.html

The Palace Hotel and the Cafe Paix are the two best bets for beer in Poperinge (and the Paix does great food too - wonderful steaks!).

In Ypres your best bets are Ter Posterie and the Klein Rijsel, both on Rijselsestraat.

For a comprehensive list of West Flanders beery spots I%26#39;d recommend The Good Beer Guide to Belgium, if you haven%26#39;t already got it.

If you%26#39;ve got the car Veurne and Diksmuide are worth a visit, as is Cassel across the border in French Flanders.

|||

Many thanks for the info I%26#39;m sure we%26#39;ll enjoy the beer as usual. Evs.

Tix to World Cup Qualifier Oct 11

Hello, I am going to be in Brussels on Oct 11, and am interested in going to see the World Cup qualifier between Belgium and Armenia. Does anyone know how it might be possible to get tickets for this? (I will be in the U.S. until the day before the game)

Thanks!

|||

Aha....... I noticed there was a lack of Jupiler League games on during my visit. I am also interested in aquiring acouple of tickets for myself and my brother in law. (I am sure we will be able to convince my wife and sister in law that it is a productive use of our time) Is the game played at Anderlecht%26#39;s home ground or King Badouin?

Is it likely to be a sell out? Any ideas on costs of tickets?

|||

It is at King Badouin. My friend filled out a form and sent it in as instructed on the stadium%26#39;s website, but hasn%26#39;t heard anything back. Those tickets were listed for 29-49 Euros, I think. Also, this site worldticketshop.com/tickets/belgium_tickets/…

is selling them online, but they are significantly more expensive. I%26#39;m not sure if its sold out or not, does anyone know how to tell? Also, does anyone know if there are any other ticket options that are more economical?

Thanks!

|||

I notice Belgium managed a good away result in Turkey. Definitely a dodgy penalty for the Turks. Anyone know what sort of crowds Belgium usually get for home games.

|||

I would guess Armenia are not exactly going to be a huge attraction. ( no offence to any Armenians intended)

|||

You can get them from the footbel site. They go from 15 to 40 Euro. They won%26#39;t send tickets outside of Belgium, but you can pick them up the day of the game.

|||

Thank you, but I have followed the instructions on the belfoot site, but have not received a reply. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks!

|||

I would send an email to :

informatie.tickets@footbel.com or you could call

+32 2/477.12.11

I would find it very surprising if it would be sold out already.

Belgium 7 day itienary

Hi-

Six or my co-workers and I are traveling to Belgium in 2 weeks for a weeks stay in Knokke (taking day trips) then to Paris for 3 days. Any help with our itienery or suggestions would be great!!

Arrive Friday : Stick around Knokke - recover from flight

Sat. %26amp; Sun.: Go to Brugge, maybe a boat tour, bewery, sightsee. May also go to other coastal towns around Knokke, Dam, O.

Monday: Go to Antwerp, see diamond captial of the world, ???

Tuesday : Ghent, see/tour a castle, walking tour, boat tour, ???

Wednesday: Brussels, main square, Battlefield (Waterloo or Battle of the Bulge)

Thurs: ?????

Friday: Leave for Paris

Any suggestions of things to do would be great. We are stay in Knokke, so things must be a reasonable time from there, are there any battlefields that you are able to get to by train - we won%26#39;t have a car. Any recommendation on castles to see or tours.

Thanks

|||

Just 2 comments:

1) The main centre for battlefields (WWI) is Ieper (Ypres), if you want to actually visit these you would have to take one of the tours run by the local tourist office, otherwise you can easily spend your time in the town visiting the Menin Gate and the wonderful museum, In Flanders Fields. The quickest way from Knokke to Ieper by train (2h15) involves changing twice, at Brugge and Kortrijk, but leaving at 09:05 you arrive at 11:20 so this is fine just to visit the town.

2) On the other hand, you cannot really do Brussels AND Waterloo, let alone the Battle of the Bulge area - on the way to Luxembourg - on the same day (especially when you are coming in from and returning to Knokke - it can take 5 hrs from Knokke to Bastogne!), and the latter area is hard to visit by train, apart from Bastogne itself.

While there is a train to Waterloo station, the battlefield is not there but at Mont St. Jean, you will have a 10-minute walk or so from the station to the main street of Waterloo, arriving by the church which is also next to the tourist office. I would stop here (I think you can get some sort of combined ticket deal from the tourist office) and visit the Wellington Museum across the street, especially the bit at the very end where there is an almost hour-by-hour reconstruction of action on the battlefield; without this it%26#39;s very hard to understand what you are seeing when you get to Mont St. Jean (where there is very little other than the Lion Mount, the %26quot;panorama%26quot; and a lot of Napoleon souvenirs). This you would do by bus W from in front of the Waterloo tourist office (which actually starts from Gare du Midi in Brussels, in Avenue Fonsny in front of the Hotel Ibis Gare du Midi).

|||

Hello,

I think Damme would make a nice extra for your visit to Brugge. It is tiny and very close to Brugge.

Antwerp is a bustling culture city with many Renaissance buildings, and has much more to offer than just diamonds: the Rubenshuis, Vleeshuis, a walk along the river Schelde, trendy bars and restaurants: a good idea for a (long) daytrip.

In Ghent I would definitely recommend that you%26#39;d visit the Castle of the Counts (Gravensteen) and stroll through the medieval city center with lots of canals. Since you%26#39;re a group of seven travelers, you could perhaps book a historical or gastronomy tour with Vizit (www.vizit.be) for the really %26#39;light%26#39; and sometimes juicy stories or with the Gidsenbond (gidsenbond-gent.be/website/engels/index.html) or Gandante (www.gandante.be) for the more serious ones (not too heavy, very interesting as well).

10 trip train pass

Hi- I have hear that you have to fill out Train Passes a certain way. I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to do this so there are no surprises. Also can a 10 Trip Rail Pass be used on different people for the same journey? Are these rail passes good on any train? Can they be bought at any station? We are thinking of picking them up when arriving at the Brussels airport for getting to Knokke. When switching trains in Brussels Midi and possibliy Brugge will we need to fill anything out on the pass or do anything different?

thanks

|||

1) I don%26#39;t know, exactly but I imagine it is like the key card, a local season ticket for people doing the same journey on a regular basis. If so, you fill in the departure town, destination town, date and possibly time of departure (this one once you get on the train, for safety%26#39;s sake). It should be clear from the card but if not, ask the ticket clerk who sells it to you how to fill it in for your first trip.

2) Yes it can be used for as many people as you like as long as you fill in a trip for each of them.

3) Any train within Belgium, yes (not Eurostar or Thalys).

4) Yes they can be bought at any Belgian station so including the one at the airport.

5) No, as long as you are taking the next connecting train your trip is Brussels Airport to Knokke, it doesn%26#39;t matter that you have to change (incidentally if you have luggage it%26#39;s recommended to change at Bruxelles-Central rather than Nord or Midi - the Knokke train is also the Brugge train and rumour has it this leaves from the same platform at Central as the airport train arrives at).

|||

Make sure to fill out the names of the two train stations (departure/arrival) in capitals.

Striking out names and trying again will not be accepted, so be very careful before you start writing.

And then a last small tip: if you use the figure 7 in a date, make sure no confusion with 1 is possible. Unlike Americans we always add a hyphon in the middle of the vertical line. A small detail that could save you quite some money.

Would anyone like.....

Two tickets to Andre Rieu concert next Saturday night?

Bought two premium tickets (146euro each) for next Saturdays concert for a special birthday treat for my mum. Unfortunately she has taken ill and has been out of circulation for the past few weeks. She won%26#39;t be able to travel and I won%26#39;t go without her as it would break my heart to be sitting there and her not with me enjoying herself. As heartbroken as she is, I am as worst. Hanging on til the last minute before I cancel the hotel - but would need to sort everything out today as we were to travel on Thursday.

Anyways its such a shame to let these tickets go to waste. I don%26#39;t want payment for them but would gladly pass them to any genuine person who would be prepared to go and enjoy the experience.

Hope this post is not contravening any TA%26#39;s rules and regulations - but I%26#39;m 100% genuine about this.

Anyone interested send me a PM

|||

What a shame you couldn%26#39;t go..........

I hope your Mum is feeling better

We actually made it!. Did you not see her little tricolour waving frantically at Andre all nigh?!!! Her doctor gave her the go ahead on the Wednesday afternoon and it was a mad rush to get ourselves sorted. We both thoroughly enjoyed the concert and hope you and yours did too

Trip report to follow.......!

|||

We enjoyed it too............shame the Orchestra were so far away, they only looked like stick pins from up in the heavens LOL

The seats were damned uncomfortable and we left 10 mins before the end to miss the debacle of the Metro we had on the way out and didn%26#39;t want to get caught in the throng of people leaving not knowing if we had to change metro to bus again.

I bet everyone living around the stadium area loved the music as well

Thankyou Gaminari

Many thanks for all your advice on the Metro Network, once I got there I realised how it worked and we jumped on and off Metro%26#39;s all weekend! Just shows how much you remember when you are back in a place you have been to before....

I adore Brussels............anytime of year. But my friend has moved to Paris so that%26#39;s where I%26#39;m headin next!

Brussels - My thoughts

Just back from a 4 night stay in Brussels to attend Andre Rieu concert. Thought I would share my views on Brussels in general with you. I have a completely different outlook on this trip as I would normally have as my mum had to use a walking stick and was a bit slow on her feet and I was more aware of the facilities (or lack of) for disabled/older/infirm visitors.

Had provisionally booked both the Carrefour de l%26#39;Europe and the Dominican Hotel earlier in the year as I couldn%26#39;t decide which one would best suit my mum%26#39;s needs. Cancelled both last Monday as she was ill and didn%26#39;t think we could travel. However Wednesday brought good news that she could, and I telephoned the Dominican who very kindly reinstated our original booking. Delighted with the choice - Fab hotel and when I saw the Carrefour was glad with my choice as I thought the Carrefour may be a bit noisy around the vicinity whereas the Dominican was a haven of tranquility (hotel review to follow).

Took train into Gare Central (2.90euro each).This is where the problems started with regards to disabled facilities. The step from the train to the platform was sooo high, a very kind gentleman had to practically lift my mother onto the platform whilst I struggled with the bags. Took taxi to hotel (10 euro) which when I realised we were so close to was a rip-off. The driver had obviously taken us on a scenic route as the station is practically around the corner from the hotel.

Hotel was fab and would highly recommend (even more so if you can get a special offer). Very pleasant receptionist checked us in and directed us to our room. We initially thought we would only be able to drop our bags off as checkin was at 3.00pm (we were there before 11.00am). Found our bearings and wandered over to the Grand Place (around the corner). What a beautiful place. I could have easily lain down in the centre of the square and gazed in amazement at the beautiful architecture for the day. As we were feeling hungry we ventured into Rue des Bouchers area. Had a pretty non-descript meal in a non-descript restaurant at astronomical price (69 euro for lunch and 2 glasses of wine). The guy out on the street had heard my mum saying to me she would like fish and harangued her (and I to a degree) to eat in the restaurant. Only for this trip was about her and for her, I wouldn%26#39;t have eaten in this place at all. The touting for business in this area is downright annoying, challenging to avoid and basically harassment. They all seemed to %26#39;latch on%26#39; to my mum as she was slower in her ability to get away from them and so obviously more polite than I was to them!. There is absolutely nothing endearing about this area at all. We went into a Chineese restaurant on the Friday evening and I left in disgust. The place was grubby, menu cards greasy and the tops of the condiment bottles left a lot to be desired. Never Again!

Following day brought torrential rain in the morning. I asked another friendly receptionist if there were any shopping malls in the vicinity (to keep my mum under cover) and she directed us to %26quot;the main shopping street in Brussels%26quot; - Rue Neuve (again only around the [another] corner). Nothing spectacular about it - chain stores with a mall at the end of the street (?city2). Reminded me of Henry Street in Dublin if any readers are familiar with it. However we spent a couple of hours in the Inno Department store and both of us did a bit of damage to the Credit Cards!. Dinner that night in Ricotta %26amp; Parmessan over the road from the hotel (highly recommended).

Opentop bus trip of the city on Saturday morning. Took a red bus tour (thank you to previous poster who recommend the red/blue as opposed to the green/yellow ones). Very pleasant bus driver sent my mum on up the stairs (another ordeal!) whilst I queued to pay. Reduction for her as an OAP - think it worked out around 34 euro for both of us.

Nice to see the city - we didn%26#39;t get off at any of the stops (my mother and her stick again!). Stopped at the Cathedral on the way back to the hotel and again back over to Inno to buy more.

Concert Saturday night at Heyzel Stadium. One of the two highlights of our trip and the reason we travelled. Taxi out and back as I didn%26#39;t want to chance the metro with that dreaded walking stick.

Other highlight came on Sunday when we took train to Bruge (those blasted high steps on the trains presented themselves again!). Thanks to Gaminari and the post to Casperica a few days ago I knew exactly where to go. BTW - Why don%26#39;t you have a Destination Expert badge Gaminari?. Will have to see about that!

Bruge - What a delight! Took the little sightseeing minibus around the streets (Great value at 11.50 each). Our driver was a delight and such a character. Anyone staying in Brussels MUST take the train to Bruge (1 hour trip)After much deliberation we bought our chocolates at the Dumon Shop. What a treat and highly recommended. The NICEST chocolates I have ever tasted (and I%26#39;ve tasted a few in my time!!. Those and the Champagne Truffles from Corne Port Royalin Galeries St Hubert will add inches to my waistline by the time I have them all scoffed!

Hotel booked us taxi to the Airport on Monday morning (50 euro).

Now for my observations:

Brussels being the %26#39;unofficial%26#39; capital of the EU is a disgrace with regards to disabled facilities. Pedestrian crossings didn%26#39;t have ramps or those little bubbly stones to let blind people know they are at at a crossing. My mum had a terrible time trying to climb up and down at the crossings. Being cognisant of the fact that the old town would have cobbled streets didn%26#39;t excuse the uneven walkways, uprooted cobbles etc. I probably wouldn%26#39;t even have been aware of how bad the facilities were if it wasn%26#39;t for her. Only saw one person in a wheelchair and her companion was having difficulties trying to navigate.

BRING CASH and don%26#39;t depend on ATM Machines. The lack of visible ATM machines is crazy. I saw one in Brussels (in that City2 place) and one on the main square in Bruge. I actually ran out of cash and had to borrow from my mum!

Anyone we encountered were very friendly and helpful and very respectful towards my mother (and her stick - my how I hated the rattle of it by yesterday!!!). One of the more endearing qualities of the city is its people.

Due to the fact that my mum was out of sorts to a degree we may have missed out on some of the special qualities Brussels may have, and didn%26#39;t get to see the museums etc (did see Mannequin Pis though in his little Tuxuedo!) or eat in any %26#39;fancy%26#39; restaurants. However the city didn%26#39;t endear itself to me in any great form and I would have no great desire to return. I would however recommend travelling on the further hour by train and staying in Bruge - which I will add to my %26#39;to do list%26#39; and maybe have a day trip to Brussels instead.

Absolutely no problem with language. Everyone speaks fluent English. I was worried that my school learnt French over 20 years ago would cause me hastle.

I in no way mean or intend to insult any of the regulars on this forum - and appreciate the help I have gotten over the past few months in preparation for the trip and hope they take my observations for what they are - my own personal experiences/opinions.

|||

Fortunately our stay worked out a little better, the Thon Residence Florence proved to be a very good choice and away from the main Tourist Trap of Grand Place.

I hear what you say about facilities for the aged, my Mum is 70 too and she didn%26#39;t cope very well with all the stairs up and down Metro Stations, especially with a travel bag in tow! :( Everywhere seemed to have steps and its no problem for me but I think Mum felt the strain quite a lot.

We did enjoy the concert although the seats in the Heysel Stadium leave a lot to be desired!! Maybe OK for a Football match but not very comfortable for a concert. We did however have quite an experience with the Metro out which was stopped at Bockstael due to a house which almost collapsed (the Mtero runs underneath it)and we were transfered to a Metro bus then back onto the metro at Stuvyernbergh. Thankfully a sweet little French girl who could hardly speak a word of English helped us and we may have even made it on the TV .......well the camera crew was out filming.........so we think we did!

We used the %26#39;Yellow/Green%26#39; open top bus on Sunday and I did manage to get my Mum to the top of the Atomium for a fantastic view but the commentary of individual sights was poor to say the least.

You have to choose where you eat carefully, some places just don%26#39;t seem to care so long as they put food infront of you but in the main most are OK. Being as we self catered we only ate out once and it was very pleasant - Rue Jardin off Avenue Louise.

Almost all restaurants serve basic food - Seafood, Pasta or Pizza. Bru Parc was packed on Saturday night so we ended up with chips and pitta bread......should have realised that.

We had a great weekend and an adventure, my Mum loved the French/Dutch cafe culture atmosphere. I love Brussels anyway.

Glad to you had a good time in the main, at least your Mum got to see her idol.........albeit from a BIG screen as the Orchestra were so small!

Brussels is indeed appalling as regards facilities for disabled people, but as regards the taxi taking you for a ride - you may not have noticed the one-way system! Gare du Midi would have been a better stop with someone who couldn%26#39;t walk very well, and easier for the taxi too.

I warn people time and time again against eating in the Ilôt Sacré (rue des Bouchers) - and then other people come on here and recommend it!! I hope they read your report and then they may understand why, except for 2 exceptions (Chez Léon and Aux Armes de Bruxelles), no local would eat there (other than the ones from a local newspaper who tested it recently pretending to be tourists, who reported that it is as bad as ever).

Re ATMs, if you are talking about Brussels (can%26#39;t speak for Brugge) I think it must be a matter of recognising them or where to look for them. For example, there is one - inside - near the metro escalator on the ground floor of the Monnaie Center (building in front of the Opera House, so maybe 100m from the Dominican), and another round the corner on rue du Fossé aux Loups (the street you cross to get to rue Neuve), opposite the SAS Radisson Hotel, also they are very often to be found in glassed-in enclosures at the entrance to banks, where you have to swipe the card in a machine by the door to gain access - one of these is on the Adolphe Max side of the Monnaie Center, so again not far from your hotel.

Anyway, glad you made it and survived the cobbles etc. Just be thankful you didn%26#39;t find the Place des Martyrs, which has the twistiest ones in the city.

Train from Brussels to Bruges

Hi

I%26#39;m going to Brussels for a few days for my birthday in October and would like to spend a day in Bruges whilst I%26#39;m in Belgium as I%26#39;ve heard it is a really pretty city.

As I%26#39;m only there for a few days I like to be prepared before I go! So, does anyone know which train station connects the two cities. I know it takes approx 1 hour but I can%26#39;t seem to find out if its the central, south or north station in Brussels I need to travel from.

Thanks in advance for your help

|||

All of them. Trains to the coast (Oostende, Knokke and Blankenberge, which stop at Ghent and Brugge), start at Nord and pass through Central and Midi. These 3 stations are all in a line and pass through the centre of Brussels (in a tunnel: at Gare centrale the tracks are underground).

|||

thank you so much for the information.

do you know if i can stay on the eurostar train and get off at the north station (it only talks about the midi station on the internet) as the north is closer to my hotel?

thanks again

|||

I%26#39;m afraid the Eurostar terminates at Brussels-Midi so you will have to change trains there for Brussels-Nord. Don%26#39;t worry, there are plenty of trains that call there - all trains going to Antwerp stop there, as I suspect do those going to Leuven, and that%26#39;s just for starters.

|||

thanks, your help is very much appreciated

|||

Also all those to the airport. While you have to change trains, your Eurostar ticket is valid on the local train to Central or Nord, as it is to Brussels and not specifically to Gare du Midi, even if that is unfortunately where it terminates.

House Collapse!

Whilst we were on our way our to the Heysel Stadium on the metro on Saturday evening we were diverted from the metro at Bockstael onto a Metro Bus as there was a problem on the line.

We soon discovered why..........a house was being held up by props and had cracked all the way from top to bottom. Must have been a scary moment for the occupants!

We got back on the Metro at Stuvyenbergh and continued our journey as normal. On the way back we did use the metro all the way through but it went at less than walking pace through the effected area.

Does anyone know what happened to the house? I can%26#39;t find a new reference to it anywhere?

Jewels

|||

A water leak in a pipe below ground caused the ground to turn to mud and therefore undermine the house: 4 buildings (27 people) had to be evacuated - among other things, the fact that the ground dropped by a foot and a half (half a metre) meant that they couldn%26#39;t open the doors! - but no-one was hurt. With damage that extensive I would guess that the houses would have to be condemned, but at least they will be able to save the contents.

|||

Thanks for that! Nice to know what happened to the house and occupants............

Group Accommodation in Bruges

Hi,

I am intending to take my fiance to Bruges in April 2009, just after Easter, for his 30th birthday.

We will be travelling by eurostar as he does not like flying. As a suprise I%26#39;ve asked his family and closet friends to join us.

I%26#39;ve looked into Austria and Switzerland, but due to the fact we will only be there a few days, Brussels (Bruges) looks like the place!

Any ideas for accommodation. I would love to hire a large house or chalet to make it cheaper for everyone. I would love a big house with a roaring fire where we can all share the living room and kitchen but need approx 7 bedrooms or more.

Possibly 2 places next to each other if they are smaller?

Thanks

Brugge dinner on New Year's Eve

We will be in Belgium Dec. 27-January 6, celebrating our anniversary. We%26#39;d planned to have a special anniversary dinner, and thought we might do it on New Year%26#39;s Eve, when we%26#39;ll be in Brugge, and then go on to the square for the festivities. However, we are not finding any restaurant that is open that night. Should we re-think the plan (have dinner another night and just pick up something casual on New Year%26#39;s Eve)? Or, does someone know of a nice restaurant that will be open?

Thanks!

|||

Hi,

Den Dijver will be open http://www.dijver.be/ I believe a set meal there is around €120 on new years eve?

Enjoy your time in Burges.

If you know any team or concatcs that play in this sport, tell me as soon as possible.

Preferably clubs close to center more or less.

Thank you very much.

|||

Maybe the Antwerp Students League can give you more information. As per their website they have an indoor football team (called %26#39;Futsal%26#39;). You can contact them by email on stephane.stievenart@sportUA.be or by phone 03-265.37.33 from Monday to Friday from 10:00 til 16:00.

¡Buena suerte! Y bienvenido a Amberes.

Things to do in belgium when travelling with an infant

Hi

Whats the best way to see the sites of Belgium in December with an infant (8 months)?

Are there any recommended day tours or perhaps self guided tours / excursions to Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp?

Whats the best way to go to say Amsterdam for a day? or even Paris? Seeing as its so close?

Thank you for your advice.

|||

Train from Gare du Midi, central or Nord (it stops at all of them), heading for Oostende, Blankenberge or Knokke, takes 1 hour and there are at least 2 trains an hour.

help with Antwerp public transportation

What is the best way to get from the Centraal Station to the Antwerp Diamond Hotel? I know this has been addressed previously on this site (take #2 or #15) but when I look on Google maps there are no little %26quot;M%26quot;s near the hotel. Some of my Antwerp friends refer to it as the tram, some people call it the metro, are there two separate systems?

Is there a tram/metro station inside the Centraal train station or do I have to use the Diamont station? I tried the Delijn trip planner and my Flemish isn%26#39;t good enough.

|||

From the train platform in Antwerpen Centraal walk 4 min. to premetro station Diamant (lowest level IN the station), take premetro (tram/metro) no. 2 in the direction of Hoboken and get off at stop Charlottalei (3 min.). Then walk another 4 min. to the hotel.

I think it%26#39;s faster to walk to the hotel than having to wait for a tram!

Metro/tram/premetro ... it%26#39;s all the same system.

|||

Thank you for the clarification. I think you%26#39;re right about walking even with luggage but if it%26#39;s raining I may want the tram. Also, I%26#39;m expecting some late nights and will need to use your directions in reverse!

How best to celebrate a special occasion in Brussels??

Hi everyone

I will be in Brussels for a long weekend in December and will be celebrating an important birthday and anniversary.

As such, I was wondering if you could give me any ideas about what to do or where to eat or drink to make it memorable?

I%26#39;ve already read about the Christmas markets and the ice skating which sounds great, but I just wondered whether there%26#39;s anything else you would suggest.

It doesn%26#39;t need to be anything really fancy or extraordinary - maybe even a restaurant or cocktail bar with a great view or something?

Thanks

Laura

|||

Brussels is not known for views although I do recommend a visit to the Musical Instrument Museum for the rooftop café.

You might find Belga Queen quite memorable, if only for the design, including transparent toilet doors (they become opaque when you turn the handle a couple of times): see www.belgaqueen.be/home.asp?city=1%26Lang=1

I have enjoyed quite a few meals there although you can certainly eat better for less in less-memorable surroundings.

Not fancy or with any sort of a view but the best waffles you will ever taste are to be had in the café above Dandoy in the rue de l%26#39;Etuve, opposite the Amigo Hotel, about a block from the Grand%26#39; Place in the street leading to the Manneken Pis.

|||

Great - thanks so much for the advice. The tip about the waffles is exactly the type of idea I%26#39;m looking for to build a perfect day.

Is this the type of place you would recommend for breakfast?

Thanks

Laura

|||

No. We do not eat waffles for breakfast but, as with pancakes (crêpes), as a mid-morning/afternoon snack. I doubt that Dandoy would be open at that time anyway although I have never been there to find out.

For breakfast you might consider Aroma in the Grand%26#39; Place - opposite the Town Hall, near the rue au Beurre. Or for somewhere really cheap, Panos opposite the (Grand%26#39; Place/rue du Marché aux Herbes side) entrance to the Galeries St. Hubert.

|||

There is a restaurant at the top of the Atomium (and a terrific view) and whilst we were there this weekend there were several people carrying bottles of Champagne and presents for a celebration they had arranged so I guess it might be a nice place for a lunch celebration.

You also get priority in the queue if you have booked a table.

It did look very nice from what I saw of it.

Jewels

|||

Thanks - I%26#39;ll definitely look into these options!

Cheers

Laura

Oostende to Calais

Hi, what are my options in traveling to Calais from Oostende(Brugge) to get my rental car. Thanks

|||

Oostende is not in Brugge, but from either town it would take you 3 or 4 hours by train with 1 change in Lille or 2, in Lille and Kortrijk: slightly faster from Brugge than from Oostende.

You could take the coastal tram from Oostende to De Panne near the French border and then find a bus to Dunkerque and then another from Dunkerque to Calais, but I don%26#39;t think this would be any faster.

Why not rent the car in Belgium?!

Trains from Schipol to Brussels

Just incase anyone is not aware the IC train (Not Thalys) time from Schipol airport to Brussels has changed.

It used to be 40 mins past every hour and has now changed to 12 mins past every hour and leaves from Platform (spoor) 5.

The train from Brussels back to Amsterdam Schipol is at 19 mins past every hour from Gare Central (obviously different times from Gare du Nord and Gard du Midi)

It may vary on weekends.

Just incase anyone is doing the same journey by train

Jewels

|||

Thans for that. I wonder if its got anything to do with them starting to introduce the new hi speed service Ams-Bru?

|||

It probably has.......there were signs for the Hi-Speed all over the place and leaflets about it too.

Guess something had to make way for it and it would be useful.........if the price is right

Jewels

|||

Does anyone know when this high speed train goes into effect?

December weekend trip

I%26#39;m going to be in Brussels for work from December 1-5. I will have Saturday and Sunday (Dec 6-7) to see more of Belgium before I fly out of Brussels on Monday. I would like to see everything, but of course a 2 day weekend is somewhat limiting. In selecting from my %26quot;list%26quot; of things to see, I am wondering if Flanders Field, in Waregem, is a worthwhile December attraction, or would it be too cold/dreary and the time better spent elsewhere? Other options include the Christmas market at Liege or spending the two days in Brugge or Gent (partaking of museums, culture, history mostly). Is there anything that is a December-only sort of activity besides Christmas markets? What would you do with the 2 days? Thanks!

|||

Unless you have a particular reason to visit the Flanders Field American Cemetery in Waregem, you might do better, in December, to visit the In Flanders Fields Museum in Ieper (Ypres). 1h44 from Brussels by train.

Otherwise, if you haven%26#39;t been to Brugge I would recommend you go there. In addition to the Christmas market there is an Ice Sculpture festival and it%26#39;s right next to the station. 1 hr from Brussels by train.

Need hotel for one night, great location near cafes

Hello,

My sister and I will be in Brussels for one night on our way back to the states from Italy.

We arrive around 7 PM and would like to stay at a hotel near all of the great restaurants and cafes. We must leave the following morning to go back to the airport to catch flight to NY.

Can you please give us some options for hotels. We would like to spend no more than 125 euros. Location is important to us. We would like to be able to see the famous statue of the boy.

Also, we would appreciate restaurant suggestions.

Thank you,

Wendy

|||

See question below about Christmas markets, the hotels mentioned as being near the Bourse are also close to the café/bar area of St. Géry (just around the corner from the Hotel Café Pacific) and - if you must - within walking distance of the %26quot;famous statue of the boy%26quot;.

Although, any hotel in the Grand%26#39; Place/Gare centrale area would be fine, and if you need to leave early the following morning you would do better to stay on the other side of the GP, e.g. at the Madeleine (see list of %26quot;Brussels Hotels%26quot; on the left of this page for more details of individual hotels). You would then be closer to the central station from which you can catch the train to Brussels Airport the following morning - and indeed arrive from the airport: for the Bourse/ Orts/ Dansaert area on the other hand, you would do better to get off the airport train at gare du Nord or gare du Midi and take the underground tram to Bourse, although trams are not all that convenient if you have a lot of luggage.

Favourite places for Breakfast, Fondue and Pancakes please?

Hi All,

HURRAHH!!! Nearly time for our Bruges trip - setting off tomorrow morning....fingers crossed for the Eurostar ;-)

So what I was wondering is if any of you knowledgable or local folks could please tell me your personal favourite places for:

a) Yummy Belgian breakfasts (we%26#39;re staying the Crowne Plaza but thought we%26#39;d head out in the mornings for brekkie!!)

b) Great Fondue!! I%26#39;m so excited about fondue....YUMMY!

c) Pancakes %26amp; Waffles ...my Dad is desparate to try!

d) Mussels (for boyfriend, its a must)

e) Great Steak! (For Mum!)

I%26#39;ve read lots of reviews of course but would appreciate you sharing your real favourites - where would you take your folks to?

Thanks All!!

Nx

|||

b) I don%26#39;t know of any Swiss restaurant in Brugge. There is a Belgian dish called, in French %26quot;fondus au fromage%26quot; - in Dutch, Kaaskroketten - but these are cheese croquettes, deep fried and nothing like the Swiss dish.

|||

d) for moules go to looftje%26#39;s, he is the expert

tripadvisor.com/…12256243

|||

c) If you want to buy waffles and pancakes, their are a lot of oppurtunity%26#39;s in the city. In the two main shopping streets you will surely find your waffles and pancakes. But I can perhaps suggest something. Their is a shop called %26#39;laurenzino%26#39; in the noordzandstraat 1, bruges. And if you%26#39;re there, and the sun is shining, you can also buy an ice-cream at the other side off the road in %26#39;da vinci%26#39;, with very good ice-cream.

e) A good place to go to for a steak is %26#39;het nieuw museum%26#39;

In %26#39;t Nieuwe Museum

Hooistraat 42

B-8000 BRUGGE

It%26#39;s a good place with typical old beer commercials on the wall... just go there.

I hope you can do something with the information.
