Central Station to Brussels Marriott

Can anyone tell me how far it is to walk from Central Station to the Brussels Marriott. We are arriving at lunchtime on Thursday for a four day visit.

Thanks

Its no more than 10 minutes, and a lovely walk. We walked this many times a few weeks ago, both day and night. It is safe, and easy. Plus, you can walk through Grand Place each time!

Not a great walk with suitcases, though. The Marriott is opposite the Bourse (stock exchange), if you are coming from elsewhere in Belgium, e.g. the airport, you would do better to get off at Gare du Nord or Gare du Midi and take the tram (pre-metro) from there to Bourse to arrive right by your hotel.

On the other hand, if you do get off at Gare centrale, don%26#39;t bother with the metro as the connection from metro to tram at De Brouckère involves walking almost as far (in the opposite direction - although there is a travelator) as you would if you just came out and walked on the surface.

Here is the metro map, showing underground trams between Gare du Nord and Gare du Midi (but not Gare centrale as it is only on the railway line between those stations): http://www.stib.irisnet.be/FR/31000F.htm

I%26#39;ve walked it with a rolling suitcase - not a bad walk, perhaps 10 minutes.

Just to add a slightly different twist to this question.

We will be arriving Christmas day 2008 hopefully and will have 2 suitcases and a 8 month baby.

What would be the most convenient way to get to the Marriot (opposite the Bourse) with the above in mind (ie dead of winter, lugging luggage and a baby) - apart from catching a taxi?

thank you for your help.

There isn%26#39;t one. Bourse is served by underground tram (pre-metro) connected to Gare du Midi and Gare du Nord but not Gare centrale, and trams (several steps up, narrow entrances, no storage space inside) are really not convenient with luggage or prams/pushchairs, let alone both. It is also served by a number of buses but not from Gare centrale, although you can get to De Brouckère (e.g. on the 71) which is a flat 5-10 minutes%26#39; walk from Bourse.

It is possible to take metro line 1 to De Brouckère, but a) there is a bit of a walk from Gare centrale railway station to Gare centrale metro station; b) the exit onto Bd. Anspach is currently undergoing renovation and I am not sure the lifts are working, if not you have to carry everything up a long flight of steps; and c), you still have a 5-minute walk to Bourse (albeit nice and flat).

Are you sure you would be arriving at Gare centrale anyway? Most people arrive either at Brussels Airport or at Gare du Midi (Eurostar). From the airport the best way with luggage would be (at least on a weekday) by bus 12 to Luxembourg and then (from around the corner in the square) bus 95 to Bourse. From Gare du Midi the best way would probably be by metro line 2 to Trône (but unavoidable steps here) and then bus 95 to Bourse; but really I would recommend a taxi from any station.

Hi qaminari

We%26#39;ll be arriving via Brussels Airport. It seems there%26#39;s no convenient way to get to Marriots from the airport with suitcases and pram in tow. Looks like we%26#39;ll have to bite the bullet and go for a taxi.

What would be the %26quot;average%26quot; cost by taxi from the airport to the Marriott?

Thank you

Hi Gaminari,

Another option would be to catch the train from the airport to Gare du Nord or Gare du Midi, as you suggested.

Which of the these stations:

- would be friendly for suitcases and baby

- would be closest to hotel

- would have taxis outside and have a better chance of getting one on christmas day?

Thank you once again.

Just returned from a great weekend at the Marriott on Sunday. Taxi fare was 40 euros from the Airport and slightly more on the return trip because of the number of bikes around on a car free Sunday slowing us down. But insist on the meter being switched on. Enjoy your trip.

1) Neither is more or less convenient, both unfortunately have steps from the platform down to the main concourse (escalators only going up) and then a short walk to taxis.

2) Nothing in it - Bourse is virtually bang in the middle.

3) Taxis wait outside all Brussels stations including on public holidays although I confess I%26#39;ve never taken one on Christmas Day (just in case there are none around, phone 02/349 4949).

That said, Nord is the first station you reach from the airport and I would prefer it over Midi.
