1 day itinerary

Will be staying 1 day and night in Brussels this October. Can anyone give us a one day itinerary that would give us a feel for this city? it is our 30th anniversary and my husband would love to go to Paris for lunch or dinner-never have been there-and were wondering if anyone had any suggestions? We have a benelux pass-would that work?Is the train station close to downtown Paris? Is there anyplace you would recommend in Paris to visit-eat with limited time?

Or...should we just stay in Brussels-enough to do?

We have a metro station in front of our hotel-Can we take an early train to airport?

Your Benelux pass will be of no use outside Benelux - that is: BElgium NEtherlands LUXembourg. If you want to go to Paris, you will need to buy a return ticket that will cover the journey between the last town in Belgium, near the border, to Paris and back. You can buy it at the Central station in Brussels beforehand.

For suggestions on places to eat in Paris, you are more likely to get useful answers if you post your query on the Paris forum.

i would say to stay in brussels. if you stay close to the grand place, the marriot hotel is the best location.

below is the list of top things to do:

I%26#39;m afraid the suggestion of using your Benelux pass to the border and travelling on to Paris from there won%26#39;t work as the only train between Brussels and Paris is now the high-speed (between those 2 cities only) Thalys, which takes 1h22 from Bruxelles-Midi, see www.thalys.com.

The station you arrive at in Paris is Gare du Nord, you can take the metro to %26quot;downtown Paris%26quot; and ask in the Paris forum for advice on what to do there.

I don%26#39;t know what metro station is in front of your hotel in Brussels, but trains for the airport leave from railway stations Midi, Central and Nord in that order. Railway trains start around 4 a.m., however the metro does not start until around 5.30 so if you need the latter to get to the former this may affect your plans, it depends on how early you mean.

Cross posted from your question in the Amsterdam forum:

We have found that some of the best restaurants are near the Place St. Catherine - the old Brussels Fish Market, which is about 10 minutes walk from the Grand Place. Much nicer than the touristy places around the Grand Place.

Brussels is a nice city for wandering - I don%26#39;t really think a tour bus would be worth the trouble - just find the Mannekin, and then wander around the centre of town - it%26#39;s all very beautiful...

Of course you need to visit a chocolate shop. Our favourite is Marcolini - absolutely beautiful, a temple for chocolate, and the most wonderful chocolate in the world.

Train to Paris for dinner? It will severely cut into your day. You would get (almost) as much atmosphere as Paris sitting at an outdoor table at a seafood restaurant at Place St. Catherine in Brussels... do you really want to spend your day in Brussels sitting on a train?
