marriott or le meridien?

planning on 7 day visit late december and checking hotels. we will be travelling with two teenagers who love to shop and eat and want to stay at a central location. i%26#39;m not sure if the neighborhood around gare central is safe for walking around at night? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

The area around Gare centrale is no more and no less safe for walking around at night than the area around the Bourse, where the Marriott is. The two areas are only 10-15 minutes walk apart anyway. It%26#39;s the Gare du Nord and Gare du Midi areas you want to avoid.

My guess, however, is that teenagers would prefer the Marriott as it is nearer the St. Géry bar area (take the street to the right of O%26#39;Reilly%26#39;s) and also, at that time of year, in the middle of the Winter Market.

For shopping, however, the Louise area is much nicer than rue Neuve.

Although your teenagers might want you to, I do not recommend eating in the Ilôt Sacré (restaurant streets rue des Bouchers, petite rue des Bouchers, rue Grétry: the streets with one restaurant after another, many with displays outside and waiters trying to encourage you in - other than at the places that have neither of these, e.g. Chez Léon, Aux Armes de Bruxelles, or the ones in the Galeries St. Hubert.

just a couple of other quick questions - why would you NOT recommend eating at those particular places?any must go to places for great beer? and is it far to the shopping area in louise? thanks again for your help!
