Traditional Brussels Hotel for the Winter Market

I am looking to stay in a really nice traditionally styled hotel close to the centre of Brussels. I would rather it was not a big chain hotel and definately nothing modern. I am after a big grand entrance hall, opulent furnishings etc... and am willing to pay for some perfect - any suggestions please!

Thanks

The only one that springs to mind in the centre is the Métropole, www.metropolehotel.com, which is near De Brouckère metro station.

I love the entrance and public rooms of the Astoria, but apart from being slightly away from the centre (although close to Botanique metro station, which you can reach directly on line 2, direction Simonis, from Gare du Midi if you are arriving on Eurostar) it is in fact a Sofitel now so may not meet your %26quot;not a big chain hotel%26quot; criterion.

Bear in mind that as I live here, I have no idea what the bedrooms are like, I have only seen the public rooms.

What about this one? Not a chain and very stylish. I have not been to the bedrooms, as I also live here too, but friends from NYC who stayed there were delighted.

PS. I agree of course with qaminari on Metropole also!

Funnily enough I have actually visited a suite at Le Dixseptième, but while it may be stylish, it does NOT have a %26quot;big grand entrance hall, opulent furnishings, etc.%26quot; as requested. The downstairs is distinctly modern and designerish and the suite I saw I would describe as (strangely!) Swedish classical: comfortable but not opulent.

Also excluded from the criteria given are the Amigo, which looks rather modern, and the Conrad which is a chain (and not in the centre although the Louise/Stéphanie location is good for shopping).

metropole rooms are pick and mix - some renovated ones are fine but many need a decent makeover! true the public areas look great. i would not recommend it

the best in %26quot;central%26quot; brussels and grandest is the amigo. it isn%26#39;t the modern but is classic contemporary in style. high staff levels mean the best service in brussels

don%26#39;t go for the meridien the rooms are dated

the marrriott whilst a bit chainy has a grand entrance and decent rooms and is also very central but has a macdonalds underneath!!

go for the amigo - you won%26#39;t be sorry and make sure you eat in the restaurant

The Astoria is closed for its -much needed- renovations. As other classic Brussels institutions i can think of course of the Metropole, but well if MrCror wants something over the top, i do not think he would be happy. I had the Jacques Brel suite and it was quaint, and just a very big room with a nice view and a big bathroom. The Plaza seems to be nice , and is a well regarded property, but not on par with its surroundings. Stanhope is the right place for someone seeking discreet elegance.

I was to stay at the Plaza, but i opted for the Royal Windsor instead, as it%26#39;s more centrally located and 40euros cheaper.

Well if you have to consider something different from the original brief (a bit %26quot;modern%26quot;, perhaps..), don%26#39;t rule out this new one! www.thedominican.be

Location is right behind the opera house, you could hardly be more central.

You might also consider the Conrad after all, it%26#39;s not right in the centre but it is in the best shopping area, has large public rooms and is more opulent than most: 1stbrusselshotels.com/conrad_brussels.html

Failing that, while it isn%26#39;t on the scale of any of the older hotels, you could also consider the Stanhope near Trône metro station, again not in the centre but with lots of life in nearby Place du Luxembourg, and easy bus connections to Bourse for the Winter Market:

MrCroc, I%26#39;d agree with Gaminari, the Metropole has the grand entrance you described and is less than 10 minutes walk from the Grand Place so is pretty central.

I%26#39;ve stayed there about 4 years ago and although we only had a basic room it was still a good standard although a little on the small side. If as you say your willing to pay for the privileges then I am sure if you booked something like a suite there the size of the room wouldn%26#39;t be an issue!

A few beers in the Metropole Cafe is always a pleasure!
