bruges and amsterdam

Hi

My wife and I shall be arriving in amsterdam from india and are planning a 6 day vacation as follows:

day 1 : arrival in ams 0630...take 1st available train from schipol airport to bruges.

day 2 : bruges

day 3 : bruges

day 4: 1st train to ams

day 5: ams

day 6: ams

day 7: early morning checkout for flight back home.

Does this programme sound good? do you recommend any interesting changes?

what are the train timings/cost from ams to bruges and back? is there a train from schipol?

Is it advisable to take a return ticket or a europass for this holiday?

thanks

Yes there is a railway station at Schiphol airport, and your most direct route to Brugge is via Antwerp, e.g.

Dep. AMS Schiphol (Airport) 08:12, arr. Antwerpen Centraal 10:01

Dep. Antwerpen Centraal 10:22, arr. Brugge 11:40

(the same at 7:12 but if your plane arrives at 06:30 I%26#39;m not sure you will get your luggage and get through passport control and customs in time to catch it).

I don%26#39;t know the cost but I can%26#39;t see why you would want any sort of %26quot;europass%26quot; (never heard of that one) since you are either making one return trip - AMS-Brugge, Brugge-AMS (airport), you would have to ask about extra cost from there to Amsterdam-Centraal, if any, or 2 single trips, AMS-Brugge then Brugge-Amsterdam Centraal. Passes are intended for people travelling extensively in the country/region concerned, which you are not doing.

Since you are starting on Dutch Railways you could look at www.ns.nl to see if it gives prices.

There is a train leaving bruges at 0530, arrives at schipol at 0849. our flight to india is at 1110.

The point is if we do as follows:

day 1-4 amsterdam

day 5...early morning train to bruges

day 6 ..bruges

day 7 .. 0530 train to schipol(0849) to catch 1110 flight to India.

are these trains punctual and won`t it be cutting to close? kindly guide.

thanks

My wife and I just returned from 3 days in Amsterdam and then 2 days in Bruges. Another option to consider is to take the Thalys high-speed train from Schipol to Brussel (Bruxelles) Midi and then change to a train to Bruges. The trains to Bruges leave every 30 minutes. Allow enough time at the Brussels station to change trains just in case the train from Bruges is late. But this rarely happens. Take the Thalys back to Schipol. The Thalys train requires a reservation and costs a little more but is well worth the expense, especially in first class. Not sure if there are high-speed trains from Schipol to Antwerp.

Sorry but THALYS IS NOT HIGH SPEED ON THIS ROUTE!! Both Thalys and the InterCity trains take 3 hours between Bruxelles-Midi and Amsterdam, because the high-speed track has not yet been built on that route - for comparison, Thalys covers the same distance between Brussels and Paris in 1h22.

In any case, you can only take trains that will arrive where you want to when you want to, and to reach at Schiphol by 9 a.m. there are only 2 possible options, none involving Thalys: the 5.31 option mentioned, which is via Gent and Antwerpen-Centraal, or 4.53 via Bruxelles-Midi. Personally if I had a plane I absolutely had to catch, which required being at the airport at 9 in the morning, I would go up the night before and spend the night near the airport. Benelux trains are normally pretty reliable but there can always be unexpected incidents precisely when you don%26#39;t want them, and you WOULD have 2 changes! If everything works out, 9 is fine for an 11.10 flight, but...
