I was going to ask why on earth someone who had never been to Europe would choose as their first destination here, out of all the wonderful places there are in Europe, a second-rate beach resort on a third-rate (compared with other areas of Europe) coastline - but on researching the RVG I see it%26#39;s a timeshare! Nuff said.

What sort of suggestions are you looking for? You will presumably visit Brugge, which is on the same railway line as Ghent and Brussels. You can also take the coastal tram all the way down to Ostende.
You might like to visit the Zwin nature reserve, right on the edge of Knokke. For a nicer beach resort, less developed than Knokke, you could take a taxi to Cadzandbad just over the Dutch border (less than 15 minutes) and walk along the pathway on top of the dunes.
