Bruge in December

My wife and I will be making our first trip to Belgium this coming December. We are only going to be in the country for a couple days. Is it best to stay in Brussels and just take a train to Bruge for a day trip or should we stay in Bruge. Also, what is the best way to get to Bruge, either from the airport or from the downtown area.

Thank you for your help.

If you go directly from Brussels airport (BRU) you take the airport train into town and change either at Gare du Nord or Gare centrale (the second may be more convenient given that Brugge train should depart from the same platform you come in on from the airport). Brugge train will have as its final destination Oostende, Knokke or Blankenberge (others are half as fast since they stop at every station) and will make one stop at Gent-St. Pieters.

To determine whether you want to stay in Brugge or Brussels, apart from deciding exactly what you want to do in the evenings, take into account time of arrival and, especially, of departure: if you have an early flight you might prefer to be near Gare centrale in Brussels so that you can get more easily to the airport. In which case, the nearest hotel to the station is the Méridien, just across the road. Although the Ibis %26quot;Off Grand%26#39; Place%26quot; and Novotel (ditto) are not far away.
