hotels in Brussels - recommendation needed

Hi,

I am going to stay in Brussels for one night in September - will arrive by train from Maastritch (NL) in the afternoon/evening and stay in a hotel for one night to catch my next morning flight (~9 am).

Can any one recommend a hotel that is conveniently accessible to the airport by airport shuttle OR public transportation (buses or metro) OR a short taxi ride. I prefer a not-so-expensive hotel (e.g. 100-150 Euro/night or lower).

Any suggestion and recommendation?

Thanks!

Just read some other posts in this forum and become aware of the safty issues in Brussels. So, please recommend hotels that are in safe area - Thanks again.

UNsafety issues in Brussels are much exaggerated, I can assure you I feel a lot less safe in London, and anyone used to cities should know what to do and not do. There aren%26#39;t any no-go areas and the main thing is to keep hold of your belongings in busy areas e.g. Gare du Midi (and purses/wallets on metro).

From MAASTRICHT I think you can arrive directly at Bruxelles-central although you may have to change in Liège, if not, then at any Brussels station. Since you need to be at the airport by around 7, I would advise you to stay near the Gare centrale which is also the best area to stay in for sightseeing (near the Grand%26#39; Place): there are plenty of hotels nearby, the Ibis %26quot;off Grand%26#39; place%26quot;, the Madeleine (look under %26quot;Brussels hotels%26quot; on the left). Trains from Gare centrale start before 5 a.m. and will take you straight to the airport in about 20 mins.

I literally just arrived home after visiting Belgium and Paris. Brussels has unsafe sections, but I doubt you will be near them. Even in the %26quot;unsafe%26quot; sections, I still felt safe since I live near Philadelphia.

Stay near the Grand Place or the Galeries St. Hubert. It is very safe there. There are gypsy beggars and I think where ever they are...tourist feel unsafe. They just ask %26quot;Do you speak English?%26quot;. I just shrug my shoulders and look at them like I have no idea what they are saying, and they walk away.

The one mistake that we made is when we left the train station we went towards the church...later to find that in the row of trees directly across from the train station, there is a path that leads you straight to that area.

Someone from Belgium could help you more than I could. It is hard to explain, but there is path that is hardly visible from the street that leads you to the fountain.

I presume previous poster means that when leaving Central Station they turned right and ended up at the cathedral. However I am a bit mystified because there isn%26#39;t a row of trees opposite the station (perhaps the ones outside the cathedral?), there is Citbank and the Méridien Hotel. Between those 2 there is an archway, through which you can see the Madeleine church, but I can%26#39;t believe this is the one mentioned, since this would be in the right direction for the Grand%26#39; Place. Basically you go under the archway, turn right and follow the street going downhill, passing Ibis, Novotel etc. on the right, at the bottom there is indeed a fountain in a sort of triangular square (Place de l%26#39;Europe). The street leading straight ahead is the rue du Marché aux Herbes, with on the right the Galeries St. Hubert and on the left, a street leading to the Grand%26#39; Place. The street on the right of the %26quot;triangle%26quot;, before the entrance to the Galeries St. Hubert is the rue de la Montagne where you will find the Madeleine Hotel.

However, there isn%26#39;t much point giving directions without knowing where someone needs directions to, and this depends on which hotel is selected.

The train is the cheapest and an easy way to get to the airport. You can use all three of the main Brussels rail stations to access the airport.

If you are arriving on a weekend, you should be able to find quite a number of hotels within your price range. Hotels in Brussels are cheaper on the weekends than during the week.

I%26#39;ve stayed at the Ibis %26quot;Brussels off Grand Place%26quot; and the Ibis %26quot;Brussels Centre Ste. Catherine%26quot;. Each is near the Grand Place and I enjoyed both hotels. The %26quot;Brussels off Grand Place%26quot; is an easy walk downhill from the Central rail station. It would be my first choice to recommend to the first time visitor to Brussels. The Ste. Catherine hotel is also %26quot;walkable%26quot; but the Metro to the Ste. Catherine station is easier for the new visitor.

If you Google %26quot;Ibis%26quot; or %26quot;accorhotels.com%26quot; will get you to their booking sites.

The Grand Place area is quite safe as many people are out and about in the evenings.
