Report on Royal Windsor September 2008

We are just leaving the Royal Windsor after a six-day stay.

With any luck, we will never stay here again.

I stayed here a couple of times about 20 years ago, and I came to the conclusion then that it was a mediocre facility with a good location, but the staff was neither helpful nor friendly.

The only change I see since I reached that conclusion 20 years ago is that they have added silly little canopies over the beds.

Just a couple of notes:

If your rate does not include breakfast, forget breakfast. The continental breakfast is 23 euros, and they are stingy. We tried ordering coffee with a %26quot;basket from the baker%26quot; - the basket came with one croissant, for which they charged 9 euros.

They offer a coffee maker with coffee for 5 euros per day, so we tried that option. Cleaning the room did not include cleaning the coffee maker. We had to call the concierge each day to get them to send somebody with another little packet of coffee, which, of course, meant we had to tip the somebody.

We needed train tickets from Brussels to Paris. I asked the concierge about alternative trains and fares. He gave me information that contradicted what I had seen on the Belgian railway website, and when I asked him about that, he told me I was wrong. I walked to the railroad station and bought two first-class tickets for 100 euros less than the rate I was quoted by the concierge.

Various and sundry staff members storm into the room with only a cursory knock - not giving enough time to respond before they open the door.

There was more, but I won%26#39;t bore you. The Amigo is just around the corner, and it is, as it has always been, much better.
