Bruges for a weekend

We%26#39;re planning on going to Bruges for a long weekend. We%26#39;re hoping to travel by eurostar from London.

Someone has suggested a hotel on the river to stop in but can%26#39;t remember the name, any suggestions?

What are the not to be missed highlights of Bruges?

Also are there markets before Christmas?

Thank you!

I went to bruges last weekend with my husband, and %26quot;De Triptiek%26quot; is the best hotel in bruges. Central position, very charming, and the breakfast included was very delicious (tel. 0032498656025), I love it!

Don%26#39;t eat at Bistro %26quot;De Mosselkelder%26quot;,expensive and the food was disgousting, I had a stomachache. %26quot;De Mosselkelder%26quot; is very central, near the restaurant %26quot;den goulden Karpel%26quot;.

finally, there are many markets before Christmas.

Don%26#39;t miss Madonna and Child in the church in the market square. One of the very few Michael Angelo works that has left Italy.

Do a little guided canal tour, or a city horse and carriage tour.

If you have time see a few of the museums with lots of art by the great Flemish painters.

See the lace makers, chocolate factory and eat the chocolate, and plenty of it, mind you the cakes are fab as well.

Need I mention beer?

Bethspoon.

Just take a day to wander around - the city is fairly small. Start at the Markt and meander down to the Minnewater lake via the back alleys and bridges (follow the crowd!). You will come across most of the sights this way plus pass some good shops in Katelijnestaat to buy chocolate, lace and beer gifts. Also some nice cafes in Walplein by the Halve Maan brewery (worth a vist I believe )

You really don%26#39;t need to take a horse and carriage ride - it costs and you will not see any more than if you walk which also allows you to stop as you want and take photos , stop in a cafe etc

Canal ride is a must but get there early if you can - there are 5 places to catch these. if you are OK with heights etc and can climb steps (366) go up the Belfry in the Markt
