Bruges Report - Excellent Weekend

We have just returned from an superb long weekend (our first ) in Bruges. Eurostar from St Pancras was trouble free and arrived bang on time. Brussels stations are a bit confusing Midi and Zuid are the same station and one couple thought Midi and Central were same (as they thought Midi was French for Central!). Trains to Bruges every half an hour although our rush hour train was packed and we had to stand most of the way.

Stayed at t%26#39;Voermoenhuys hotel behind Belfry and Markt. Its small and basic but very good value for location, with clean rooms and nice people. On a quiet street too in spite of being in central area. They give a discount card for the main attractions

On our first night we ate in the Markt square. Food is generally quite expecive we found but most places do a set menu for less than 20 euros etc and we actually had quite a nice meal for 16 euros although with beer, bread, coffee etc it actual came to twice that much. On the next two nights we ate at Cambrinus just off the Markt. Very many thanks to those on the forum who recommneded this place. I am a big fan of Belgian Beers and a number of places are good for beer but nor so good for beer (t%26#39; Beerjte, De Garre) but Cambrinus not only has the best selection of beers (3 - 400) but also has amazing food so much so that we went there two nights running - highly recommended.

We did an early morning canal trip before the crowds decended (they go from 5 places try and get to one before 11am)and then spent the rest of day walking our way towards the Minneater lake stopping off etc at various places. We found some nice cafes outside the Halve Maan brewery but didn%26#39;t do that trip as it was a lovely day and we were going to save it for when it was wet. It never was so we missed this and will do this time.

Sunday we hired bikes from a shop just round the corner from the hotel. 10 euros a day which enable us to go a lot further out, visiting the windmils and the northern part of town and we also had time to cycle to Damme along the canal. Lovely place, worth a visit by whichever method you choose - bus, car, cycle foot or even by paddle steamer

Monday we bought presents - mainly beer, chocolate and lace as you would expect. Was going to go to the Groenige but this was closed.

Everywhere in Bruges is picturesque - its like a lost world. cars are few, there are hundreds of bikes, and horse and carriages to watch out for if you are walking - particualrly watch out for cyclists as they can go wrong way down ne way streets

Could go on as there was aso much to say but its a wonderful place and soemwhwer everyone must visit

Thanks to all the information provided on this forum which helped us to plan this trip

Thanks for taking the time to write this detailed report.

It conjures up many memories of our visit to Bruges, and agree with you re; %26#39; lost world%26#39;. In our mad world, it%26#39;s like a land that time forgot. We loved it.

Bethspoon.
