I have several days to make a few day trips from Brussels. I%26#39;ve already been to Bruges. I was thinking of the obvious ones like Antwerp and Ghent, and perhaps Dinant? What does everyone think? Is Dinant worth seeing, or Liege, perhaps? The caves in Dinant intrigue me and I think I%26#39;d like to see them but is there enough to keep someone occupied for a whole day, or only a half-day?

Dinant is a small town but very pleasant to wander around on a day with good weather. The fortress is certainly worth a visit.
All of the daytrips you mentioned above have chapters in Earl Steinbicker%26#39;s %26quot;Daytrips in Holland, Belgium and Luxembourg%26quot;. I%26#39;ve used his guides for more than 2 dozen trips and he has never let me down.

Antwerp and Ghent are well worth a visit for a day. Dinant is a very charming small town and as the previous poster said, the fortress is worth a visit. In that area is also the Abbey of Maredsous and the grounds around there make for a very nice hike if the weather is good.

The abbey looks great - however I won%26#39;t have access to a car, so getting there may be a tad difficult? I hope there%26#39;ll be enough in Dinant to occupy me for at least half a day. :)

I also am interested in day trips while in
Brussels this October, what is the best way to get between cities such as Ghent, Bruges and Antwerp? thanks!
|||
You should also consider Ieper (Ypres) if you are interested in history - you can get there by train from Brussels no problem
|||
If you book a TGV or Thalys in advance, you could also do a day trip to Paris (1h20m) or Lille (1h20).
You could also go to Aachen in Germany, which is about an hour and three quarters on the Thalys, and Maastricht.

To Miamax....
Each of the three cities you mentioned are easily reached by rail. And all make excellent daytrips, with Ghent being my slight favorite of the three.
The %26quot;Daytrips%26quot; book I mentioned above includes chapters on all three cities.
The publisher offers downloadable samples of daytrips so you can get an idea of what is offered in the guides.
Google %26quot;hastingshousebooks.com%26quot; to get to the website. Then click on the %26quot;Daytrips Holland, Belgium and Luxembourg%26quot; picture. That will take you to a page where you can download the sample daytrip which is %26quot;Flemish Open Air Museum at Bokrijk%26quot;.
The Steinbicker guidebooks are well worth the money given the information he provides.
Have a great time in Belgium (I always do!)

I would like to combine Antwerp and Bruges on my day trip out of Brussels, wanted to check if it is do-able? are both cities in the same direction?
|||
They are not in the same direction from Brussels. Bruges is west and Antwerp is north. To do both in a day wouldn%26#39;t leave you with much time to see both cities.
|||
Thanks very much, i will keep this in mind while planning my trip.
cheers
