Husband and I are currently in Trier, Germany and need to be back in Amsterdam on Saturday night... we want to make a stopover (we%26#39;re driving!) somewhere along the way back to Amsterdam... this is a bonus trip, it wasn%26#39;t part of our original plan, so any suggestions would be fabulous, otherwise, we%26#39;re just going to drive and wing it! Also, any hotels you recommend off the top of your head would be great... again, I hate to come here with so little research, but like I said, this is so last minute!
ALSO! Any smaller city, town areas worth checking out, fabulous too! We definitley like the cozy, etc. feel of places as well. Brugge is out this trip...that%26#39;s for next time!

As you are coming back for Brugge, and can easily visit other places in Belgium then, I would advise you to stop in Maastricht (NL).
If you want to know about other places between there and Amsterdam, ask in the Netherlands forum.
