I am thinking of having two nights in Ghent and two nights in Bruges towards the end of December. Which place is best to spend the actual New Years Eve in? and why? any info back most appreciated. Many thanks.

It depends on what you like best: a relatively calm and quiet New Year%26#39;s Eve or a city centre crowded with people all night. The latter is the case in Ghent. I%26#39;m not much of a party animal myself, but I know people who are love coming to Ghent on New Year%26#39;s Eve. It is a very %26#39;young%26#39; city, because it has a big university and many students stay in Ghent after they have finished their education.

I agree with Kathleenv. Personally I think Bruges - since it is more depending on tourism - makes a bigger effort to create a classical new year atmosphere, but if you want to go out in the evening Ghent is a better choice. A very good place to spend New Year is the Vooruit cultural center ( http://www.vooruit.be ). But you will need to reserve in advance.
