Going to Belgium in Dec 2008

Hi

I will be traveling to Belgium in December and would like to find out where I can find authentic Belgium food in cheap / affordable resturants.

More specifically I will be in Brussels and Bruges.

Perhaps can also include what are the food that I should try while in Belgium.

Many thanks

You must try Frites!! (fried potatoes) Simply amazing. Also, mussels if they are in season!!

With exchange rate movements, it is difficult to say what would seem like a reasonable price to you, in euros (especially 2 months from now..)!

For mussels and fries I would not recommend you to go for the most economical option, necessarily, but a good price/quality ratio is to be found at Chez Léon in rue des Bouchers, one of the few recommendable places in that street (or surrounding streets e.g. petite rue des Bouchers and rue Grétry).

Aux Armes de Bruxelles is another good place in the area, but a bit expensive, La Taverne du Passage in the Galeries St. Hubert a bit more reasonable (or it was last time I looked). You could also take a look at Museumbrasserie, the restaurant of the Fine Arts Museum (http://www.museumfood.be/flashOK.html)

Belgian dishes include %26quot;fondus au fromage%26quot; or %26quot;fondus aux crevettes%26quot; (cheese or shrimp croquettes, served as a starter), carbonnades flamandes (meat stewed in beer), rabbit in Kriek (a type of beer), and various dishes made with %26quot;chicons%26quot;, which translate as either chicory or endives depending on which variety of English you use, e.g. chicons au gratin, chicon wrapped in ham and served with a cheese sauce and mashed potatoes.

... and waffles, especially for afternoon tea, the absolute best place to try these is Dandoy in rue de l%26#39;Etuve opposite the Amigo Hotel near the Grand%26#39; Place.
